"I might be though. If these things can come from my portals. Then I need to learn everything I can about what may be on the other side. Because I've been thinking about this, and I'm not going to stop using my power. And I am tired of being afraid."
"The animals, at least, seem to be far too large to come through your portals, for what it's worth."
After all, they had been massive.
"The robots... well, they aren't supposed to exist any longer. We destroyed their central intelligence, and the rest vanished. I see no reason why they should be coming through your portals at all."
"Well, I've done some digging. What if my portals don't just open up to the Nexus? There seem to be many possible futures. Many possible worlds. Perhaps there is more than one robot apocalypse future."
Aaron gets the feeling this is going to happen every time he visits Director Gavyns. But all that Nexus talk was interesting, at least, and clearly important. He gives a nervous little laugh, before regaining his composure.
"Well, next to robot apocalypses and alternate universes, maybe it's a small thing..." He shrugs. "Well, a couple more things, won't take too much time. First, if it's not a private affair -" and he wouldn't be surprised if it was - "I'd been going to ask if you could let me know when the service ends up being. I'd like to maybe go pay my respects if I can. If it wouldn't be disrespectful for me to even be there."
She'd died a hero after all, and on his watch. If he'd been a little faster...
"Also, uh, I remembered Enya coming to talk to you last time I was here, about throwing things? I've been working with Mr. Amtrum to develop my powers further, but I was wondering if you might be willing to help now and then. Um, when you're not too busy, if it's not any trouble, I mean." He looks sheepish! He'd felt more confident about this before he came. "I like working with Mr. Amtrum, when he's not stabbing me, but to be able to do anything to him at all I have to come at him with a pretty specific strategy. I want to have a little variety in my instructors just to keep myself flexible, and I figured maybe multiple perspectives and experiences could help me get stronger than relying solely on one person."
Not that he hadn't been taking classes with anyone but Mat, but when you had the opportunity to maybe work with people so experienced and powerful, why not take it? He looks a little embarrassed to even be bothering Jack with this though, not to mention how his focus keeps jumping around a little - he didn't come up here with a plan so much as a few specific things that had to be brought up at some point.

"It's tough to get super specific with a power as open-ended as mine," Aaron admits with a frown. "I guess general training might help, but something Mr. Amtrum and I haven't worked on much is figuring out how to improve my raw power."
It's harder to figure out how to do that with a power like this, whereas if he had super strength he could just bench press trucks or something. Not to mention not much real instruction happens with Mat, it's been mostly sparring so far.
"I've heard stories about you, sir, read reports of you in the field. I know the kind of offensive might you have at your disposal. Creativity, I can work on, and Mr. Amtrum is good at spotting weaknesses in my game - if I were working with the both of you, that'd happen even quicker. But if I can work with you, sir, I think it might help me actually become more powerful, not just smarter with using what strength I already have."
With greater strength will come being able to do more, being able to do more of it at once, and getting better results when he does it. And being stronger will mean he can stop people like bomb lady, or the giant; imagine if he'd been able to just throw a dome over her and contain the blast.
"Really, you're the veteran here, sir, so I figured once you had a look you'd know what I can work on to be more effective overall, but that's what I was thinking in particular when I thought to ask you."

Jack leans forwards, putting his elbows on his desk.
"Raw strength comes with time. I can't offer you a quick way to get the power you're looking for without years and years of training. What I can offer you, however, are different ways I've used to train myself when I was younger. While they won't give you immediate results, you'll still end up stronger for it. Aside from that, I'm sure there's other things I can teach you, too."
"That would be just fine, sir. I'm not exactly looking for an easy shortcut, a way to get instantly as strong as you or Mom or whomever."
He's a weightlifter, he understands gradual results and training.
"I know power comes with time, but I felt like you could at least get me on the right track. And I'd be happy to learn anything you'd be willing to teach me."
If nothing else, his files and exam evaluations have always noted how determined a student he is.
