The night air was cool on her skin and she had managed to go mostly unnoticed. She enjoyed getting away, when she could manage it.
Sneaking up to the roof with a bottle of "water" and a pack of cigarettes hidden in her jacket, Leif sat with her legs dangling and hummed a merry tune to herself.
Night, at last. What a long goddamn day it had been. And here he was, not tired enough to sleep, not knowing what else to do. Not knowing what to think.
The roof was a bit of a cliché spot for getting away, but it worked well enough for its purposes, and so up he went. Trying not to think about last time he was up here. At least the night's air on his face would feel nice.
He hadn't expected someone to be sitting at his usual spot, though. Just sitting there, legs dangling off the edge - bit dangerous, wasn't that? Well, whatever, not his business. If they fell, his powers were stronger at night, so he could catch them easily.
Aaron would walk up, and take a spot a little bit away, so as not to get in the way.
The figure - a girl he didn't know - shot a look his way as he approached, and to be polite, he made brief eye contact. Gave her a nod. Made sure he wasn't downwind when she lit up that cigarette.
No judgment on smokers. He just didn't want to breathe the stuff. He would sit there quietly for a moment, part to see if she'd say anything, part to have the company of his own mind. Finally, though, he'd offer a few quiet words.
"Sorry if I'm disturbing you. Didn't think anyone else would be up here."
Don't spit it out, don't cough. He'd never had... whatever this was in this bottle, but it kicked like a draught horse.
The heat was nice, though. It shut out the winter air, and the coldness in his gut. He'd given it back, and almost as soon as he had it was put in his hand again. How could she drink this stuff so fast? Still, don't be rude. He took another swig, bracing himself for the kick. Once he'd taken the sip, he would hand it back to her.
"Long day for you too, then? Or just like the view up here?"
If he could ask.

Oh, if his parents knew he was drinking on the roof with some girl he'd literally just met...
Whatever. He might love them, but they're not here. They haven't had the day he'd had.
"Well, I won't judge. Free country." Aaron would take... three sips, glad the darkness hid his wince, the stirring starting in his head as he handed it back to her. His body starting to go 'what the hell are you doing to me'. "Don't think I've seen you around here. I'm Aaron."
Aaron couldn't be-Leif how easily this conversation was coming to him. Maybe that stuff, whatever the hell it was, was what he needed to open up a little. He didn't touch it though, he just left it where she'd put it. Everything was already getting... light, spinny. He actually rubbed his forehead a little, a gesture he'd picked up from Sarah.
Maybe it was the drink, but he didn't mind the laughter. It sounded nice, actually made him smile, even as he shook his head.
"No, I don't smoke. But thank you."
But then, he usually didn't drink, either. Not more than the occasional glass of wine at a nice dinner, or a little bit of beer to be polite at a party.
"Where'd you come here from, if I can ask? You sound English?"
"My family is English," she confirmed, tucking the Pack into the pocket of her jeans. "I grew up just a ways down the lane."
He might not have been able to see the wink in the darkness, but she thought it was hilarious that he would ask. She chuckled, grabbing the bottle and taking a swig.
"I retained a lot of the language. I'm technically an American, though."
He actually did see the wink, and it made him blush a little. His power over it wasn't as extensive as his mother's, but the darkness was still his domain, and he could actually see pretty well up here. Darkness was like a favourite blanket or coat, to him.
Not that he'd have any idea what was funny about it, if she said.
"That's pretty cool," he offered, not reaching out to take the bottle since she didn't offer him a turn. And because he wasn't sure he wanted another kick to the throat from that stuff. "This place has people from all over. One of the things I like about it, all the different sorts it draws."
Well, not liking it hadn't been much of an option, with who his parents were.
"I'm, uh... not 'actual military' material," she said, OBVIOUSLY sarcastic. She rolled her eyes and leaned back slightly, grabbing the bottle and taking another swig.
