Despite being tempted to just smash Aegis to pieces right now and bring its memory banks to R&D, Lucien lets him go and turns to knock on the door again!
"Aegis still has some kind of active communication with the Empire, using satellite connections - Eliott disabled the connections when she reprogrammed him, but at some point he went and fixed them. He claims to have received communications from the Empire but discarded them, maybe that's true - whether he's talking to them, though, they're talking to him. He says he would be able to detect if someone else were communicating with them here, too."
He lets that sink in.
"Bad news is, whenever I asked for more detail I was told it's restricted info. Since we don't have Imperial security clearance and all. Apparently it's part of his programming, not something he can do anything about, but he could be lying for all I know. If I ask if it knows Harold's name, if someone's been talking to the Empire recently, if he has been talking to the Empire... 'restricted'."
He even makes the air quotes!
"Looks a bit like we've got two choices. Three maybe. We find Eliott as fast as possible and get her to change his programming so he'll tell us more, we find someone better than Eliott, or we read Aegis' memory directly, be that making him give it to us, or smashing him to bits and taking the data the hard way. Risks corrupting the memory though."
"Is it possible Aegis is the one giving information to the Empire? Any report of the thing I've seen has had it acting strangely. And I found it in Tutorial scrapping our robots, not to mention I don't like the whole 'oh, I just randomly decided to reactivate my comms with the Empire' thing."
He does a falsetto impression of Aegis' voice for the airquote bits!
"Yeah. I could go out and kill it right now but if I'm wrong, we're stuck."
Even though he's not sure he is wrong.
"Either I can look for another lead, or we can focus on getting Eliott back as fast as we can so we can see how far this trail goes, and I can help investigate what happened to our vanished agents. Which do you think is our best shot?"
"Sounds like our best bet. Besides, she and those other agents might need our help!"
He nods! He's met junior agent Josh, seems like a good kid. A lot of those vanished names are familiar in fact!
"I'll help search for them, too. I don't know if we're going to get a better lead than whatever's stuck inside Aegis' database, not unless we can trick Harold into giving something away."
That slimy old bastard clearly knows what's going on.
If Jack had just let Lucien do his thing, they would know everything by now. Harold would've ratted out his own mother to get Lucien off his back!
"You know me, I don't like waiting. Especially not when someone is betraying us to the Empire and my hands aren't around their worthless little neck right now."
Okay, breathe. Thin ice, remember?
"I'll read up on that bank robbery and start looking into the missing agents. I'm sure I can get something out of someone. No breaking bones this time, promise."
