Evie hesitated a moment before she went to go see Jordan. Things had been so busy, but she had made sure that he was still as comfortable as he could be, checking on him whenever she had time.
Walking in, she nodded to the guards and offered them a smile that obviously wasn't as bright as usual, then made her way straight to Jordan's cell.
Unlike other times she's visited, Jordan is sitting on his bed, looking straight at her, looking about as calm as a man in his situation can be. When he sees her, though, his face does light up for a second.
"Evie, hey. How're you doing? I thought the guards were gonna blow me off for a sec there."
"'Bout as good as you can expect. That ninja guy who was in here, if your guys didn't take him out I was gonna bust out of my cell and give 'im a good beatdown."
The easy confidence fades after a moment, though, as if it were a mask he can't keep on.
"This is really happening, huh? War? I heard the announcement, couldn't not."
"Y'all have been so nice to me despite what the news says I did, especially you, Evie. And I know my history, know the news; I know what the Empire does, what they're gonna do if they're not stopped."
He keeps his hand where it is, so Evie will see it if she looks up!
"I can't hide from the real world any more. Not with this goin' on. I don't care if Hursley an' his goons are still out there... I want to help. I want to ask y'all to let me out, to let me fight alongside you. It's the least I can do for all you've done; bein' through what I've been, I'm not lettin' anyone else live like that if I can help it."
"Thanks. Tell 'im I'm willin' to do whatever he wants, to prove myself. I'm serious about wantin' to help."
He tries to give her his best smile, though after all he's been through, and with the reality of the coming war, it's not as strong as it could be.
"And hey, before I go, maybe you'll let me do somethin' for you? Kinda pay you back for how good you've been to me - you've been the first person since I got arrested, outside of my family, to treat me like I'm human."
"And you're the only one since this whole mess started to respect that. Even these guys," he indicates the guards, "look at me like I'm somethin' to keep from going on a rampage, not a guy."
One of the guards turns around as if offended, but his partner puts a hand on his shoulder, like he's going "not worth it, bro".
"You've got no idea how much it means to me. Thought I'd go my whole life with people treatin' me like a monster."
Too late for no blood to spill, but he doesn't say that. Evie already knows.
"I can't just sit here while other people're out there fightin' and dyin' though. I'll be careful, and I'll make sure as many of the good guys get to go back home as I can, okay? Promise."
