He doesn't want to hit her too hard, but this is educational. He puts more strength into the pull, gradually, to force her to strain even harder to resist being thrown to the floor.
Then, it might be cheating a little but this isn't a sport. He blasts her in the chest to knock her off balance enough to complete the throw!
It's a strong hit, but not enough to actually hurt her.
Aaron keeps the grips he has and solidifies her shadow underneath her, before the tendril that pulled her down by the collar wraps round her throat and presses down as if he were applying a rear naked choke. It's very carefully applied, without enough pressure to be dangerous, but the longer she took to figure out an escape the tighter it would get, so she would be left with the choice of breaking free or giving up.
He trusts she'll figure something out if she doesn't panic, though.
Aaron doesn't resist as much as he could, but he does try to keep his grip and draw it tighter when he can; even though he's stronger and more experienced, she's supposed to be learning here, and that means providing her with just enough resistance. He watches carefully to make sure she's all right, and to see what she can figure out.
He can't help her, but if Matt doesn't spot it he can maybe sneak her an idea or two. If she needs it.
The tendril fades away as the distraction - plus him liking the move she pulled - causes him to let go! It wasn't the trick he expected her to come up with but it's not bad. However, he still has shadows wrapped solidly around her feet!
She might remember him saying this power wasn't just shadows. It's not pitch black in here with the lights off, but it is dark enough to give him plenty to work with. While her feet are trapped, he lashes out at her from all around - including directly above and beneath her - with bolts and whips of solid darkness, many more of them coming at her than the barrage of shadow punches she sent his way before.
He lets himself smile. Since nobody's getting hurt, this is a fun little exercise so far.
Aaron keeps it up to let her get a feel for defending against his attacks, be that reflecting them into the darkness or some other way! If she messes up with an attack, though, he brings it home for a hit, because she's not going to learn otherwise.
Aaron stops attacking for a moment, kind of impressed by that move! No sarcasm, he actually thinks that's pretty cool, especially from someone completely new to his power.
He's not going to just stand there and get hit in the face though. When her shields drop to allow her to attack, he takes control of the "wave" of darkness she's riding and makes it fling her towards the ceiling! If she doesn't stop it, she'd fly up until a "wall" appears above her and swats her back down to the floor.

Well, he's glad she's okay, and doesn't mind taking her hand to help her up! Though he lets go once she's on her feet, and also looks guilty about the bruises.
"I thought so too; you did pretty well just starting with my power." He gives her a grin and looks to Matt. "What did you think?"
Aaron grins at the praise from Matt, before he's asked about concentration.
"I inherited this power from my mom," he says. "She's like, a thousand times more powerful than I am, and she's been teaching me how to use it since I first got it as a little kid. It's all down to practise; just like your senses get used to working without light so you don't blind yourself, with enough training you're able to focus better on turning it to your ends. Better control over the power, more stuff you can do with it, the ability to do more of that at once. Good old concentration training helps too."
He's been doing this so long it's sort of second nature, so actually breaking it down to explain it is a little tricky for him. Trickier than explaining how to throw a punch or lift a weight, at least.
"Let's do this more often, if you like. You'll get better, and I think I can learn some things too, with how creative you are."
Seriously, that surfing move was cool.

"Sounds good to me. Uh, sorry about the cheap shot, though..."
Even if it was to help her learn, he still feels kind of guilty! "If you like, maybe sign up for some art classes too. Creativity helps a lot with this power, so - I mean, not that you're not, but I know it helps me a lot so maybe you'd get something out of it?"
