She stood there on shaking legs, staring at Aaron. Normally, she would try to hide this, to keep it hidden from everybody... Especially somebody like Aaron. He was so sweet, so kind. She wanted to be the normal girl, the kind of girl he wanted to get to know. But she couldn't stop it.

He punched her, and her breath left her body. She fell to her knees before him, coughing, as pain racked through her entire body. Tears sprang to her eyes and she struggled to catch her breath, her entire body shaking.

But, despite that pain, she did something that most people wouldn't be able to do.

Very carefully, she stood on shaky legs, her entire body quivering.

"You haven't had enough?"

He had to respect how tough she was, but he couldn't keep the surprise out of his voice. Credit where due of course, a lot of people wouldn't've been able to stand up from Aaron hitting them like that, but he didn't have to like it. He wanted to tell her to stay on the floor, to stop; seeing the shaking, and the tears in her eyes, was a knife in the heart. He wanted to throw off his gloves and comfort her, not keep hitting her.

Aaron froze. If she wanted to get in a free shot, that would be a good time to do it. If not, his next shot would be much weaker, but still fairly hard, a right straight directly for her solar plexus. Maybe if he could convince her to stay down she'd snap out of it...

She took a few weak steps forward and raised her fists, but her limbs were tingling. Even her victim was begging her to stay down, where she could just exist in the pain for a little while. It made her dizzy to fight against it... Or was that the hits she had taken to the head? Significantly more used to punches against her back or her sides, she was having a difficult time with the soreness that radiated her hips.

Before she could gather herself to throw another punch, Aaron landed one on her, and she went down again. She was wheezing as she struggled to catch her breath, and a moment of panic set in. Her body didn't want to listen to her as she moved, forcing herself up, to her hands and knees. Her entire body shook with the effort.

She moved back, as if she was going to try and stand. She braced herself, one hand on her knee, and looked up at Aaron with tears freely running down her face.

The demon had fled her eyes, leaving behind only Piper, who looked as if... Well, as if she had the breath knocked out of her. Still, she managed to stand, stumbling a few steps as she tried to regain any sort of balance.

One last time, she put her hands up, and made a weak attempt to get a jab in at his chest.

"Piper?"

She could barely even stand up. He hadn't meant it to get out of hand like this. What kind of man was he? At some point he'd torn his gloves off and thrown them aside, on autopilot, and now he walked up to her, hands down. The wheezing, the tears in her eyes, the way she shook as she tried to keep on her feet - there wasn't a referee in the world who would let this continue. Whatever had gotten into her, it was gone from her eyes, when he looked it was just her.

Disgust at himself roiled in his stomach, and at first he didn't react when her fist tapped his chest. He just stood there for a moment, seeing if she would manage anything else, before reaching up to gently take her hand in his and move it aside. Just let it be over.

The last thing he would do was drive the palm of his other hand into the same spot he'd just punched her. A much softer blow, compared to his other punches there was hardly any force at all, but firm enough he hoped it would make her stop. Because, seriously, he'd had enough. If she still wanted more after this, he wasn't going to give it to her.

The second his hand hit her, she froze. Her entire body was quivering, begging her to stop, and she couldn't do anything more. Her fingers gingerly wrapped around his and she shuddered, pulling that hand closer to her as her legs threatened to give out.

Instead of falling to the floor, she leaned into him, almost as if she thought he could save her from collapsing. She wasn't able to breathe properly, and the tears were falling freely. When she wheezed in a breath, it came out as a sob.

If he would let her, she would wrap her arm around his waist and grab onto his shirt, to hold him against her, as she cried.

This hadn't been a spar, it had been a beatdown. It had been almost bullying. What the hell was wrong with him? First the incident with the Miami kids, now this? It had snapped her out of... whatever came over her, she seemed back to normal now, but surely there was another way somewhere. Maybe if he'd just stood there and let her give him her best shots; he would've been tough enough, he was sure.

She was having a hard time even breathing. What the hell had he done?

He didn't stop her when she latched on to him, in fact he put his arms around her and held her as close as she'd let him. Let her cry it out, calm down from whatever took over earlier, relax. He could find a seat if she needed one. For now, he just held on, occasionally running a hand through her hair.

"Hey, you're okay. I've got you. You'll be fine."

He said it, and meant it, but did he deserve to say it? If he'd walked in on someone else smacking a girl around like this, he would've broken their arms.

Piper clung to him as if he were the only thing keeping her where she was. She cried softly and hissed in a breath, struggling to keep herself upright. She ducked her head against his chest, letting him hold her up, letting him support her.

She believed him when he said he was there for her. Even with her head spending, even with the sick feeling, she believed him, and let him hold her. She would, eventually, sink to her knees, unable to support herself, but she would try to cling tight and bring him down with her.

"Thank you," she said breathlessly, not bothering to open her eyes. "Thank you."

When he felt her knees start to give out, he would make her shadow solidify, rise, and expand into a little bench for the both of them to sit down on, still holding on even as he guided her onto it. Better than the floor, at least. Her thanks felt hollow - this was his fault, how the hell could he claim to be here for her?

He wanted to be sick. He'd need fresh air soon, but for now, he was needed. He didn't let go, wouldn't unless she asked him to. Aaron wasn't good enough for this, but if it did any good at all, well, he had to try.

"Do you want to go to the infirmary?"

He'd pulled his punches enough to avoid real damage, but she still looked and sounded pretty messed up.

She let him sit her on the bench, without thinking about what she might be sitting on. She didn't seem to care... She just wanted to be held for a little longer, a moment longer at least. She nuzzles her head into his chest and let out a soft sigh.

It was difficult for her to focus on what he was saying. Her head felt light and her world was spinning any time that she tried to open her eyes. She blinked a few times to try and shake free the cobwebs, but they held firm. Her brain had dumped its endorphins into her system and left her feeling exhausted.

"No infirmary," she murmured with a soft chuckle, still able to give his side a gentle, almost affectionate squeeze. "Not that hurt." At least, she didn't think so.

"All right. I've got you."

He just held her instead, then. He'd be able to tell if she seemed in serious trouble, at least, or he'd hope so. There were a lot of questions he felt like he should be asking, most of all what the hell that whole thing had been about, but it really didn't feel like the time. The sudden complete 180 had him a little on the back foot anyway.

Sometimes, one didn't need to say anything. He'd sit there as long as she needed him to. It let him get his breath back, and let her get everything out.

The moment extended out as Piper calmed herself down, letting Aaron's soft words and his arms around her relax her. It took a little while, but the tears stopped and her breathing returned to normal.

She was still clinging to him, allowing the pain to wrap around her body and ebb in and out of her. Her eyes remained closed as she rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.

Thump thump.

She smiled, a soft sort of smile, and leaned away from him just enough to look up at him, keeping her arms around him. "I'm sorry," she said softly, but her smile was still upon her face. She raised a hand to gently brush her fingers across his cheek.

"What for?"

Well, probably this entire weird episode, but he wasn't going to push on that front. If he'd not involved her in a stupid, needless witch hunt, if he'd just gone out and fought Ryan alone, none of it would've happened. Even if he could guess, though, that didn't mean he'd make a big deal of it right now. She didn't need that when she'd only just snapped out of it.

Oh, God. He'd have to apologise to the Miami kids too. He'd been such a dick, even if they didn't know it. He knew Director Harris, how could he ever doubt he'd have brought students who were on the up-and-up?

Anyway, the contact with Piper felt nice. Moreso than hitting and being hit any day. He'd keep his hold on her and let her touch his face; it wasn't like anybody else needed this training room right now, so for the time being he was content to sit there.

She smiled, something reminiscent of Fiona, as if she had some sort of secret hidden behind those lips. Endorphins often made it difficult for people to articulate what they were thinking, what they might be feeling. She continued to lightly stroke his face for a moment, her words a bit jumbled.

"Didn't want you to see that... But you helped me... Thank you..."

Her words were soft and almost purr-like. She leaned closer to him, wanting to touch his skin, wanting to feel him. She looked content to sit there for a moment, before finally saying, "I'm sorry I'm a freak."

Angel had sat quietly long enough.

*Ahem*

"We're all freaks here!"

Angel would call out.

"Ya know, just saying..."

Angel then realized he probably spoke out of turn...

"Sorry! Shutting up now.."

"You're not. Don't say that."

Well okay, whatever happened with her wanting to get hit so much and whatnot was a little odd, and part of him still wanted to know what was up there, but "freak" was several steps too far. Especially given how many anti-meta types had taken to using it as a slur, over the years. People who could lift trucks or use their own blood as a weapon or snap the laws of physics over their knees weren't freaks, and neither was she.

It was a little tough to concentrate with the face-stroking, though. Not a bad thing, but it kept interrupting his line of thought as he realised she was touching him, and that cut off anything he planned to say. His cheek turned red under her touch, and his mind was a little off balance by all the abrupt shifts today. Hormones and inertia kept him where he was for the time being.

At least until Angel decided to pipe in and remind them he was there. Aaron would almost have forgotten, so maybe that was good. Him randomly shouting across the room at them had Aaron look up at him, blinking, but he wasn't really sure what to say. Angel'd get a brief, annoyed scowl directed his way for his trouble, but not a reply. His contribution sort of brought him abruptly back to reality, however, and so he sort of sat there trying to figure out what he was doing.

He'd let Piper go if she wanted, or not if she didn't.

Piper had lifted her chin at his words, looking Aaron in the eye as she contemplated what he said. Not a freak? She was a meta human. She was a killer. She was a masochist. But she wasn't a freak? If it weren't such a serious conversation, she might have even laughed. She felt like a freak...

But that was forgotten with Aaron there, holding her. She felt almost... Normal. She felt butterflies in her stomach and heat beneath her skin. She wanted to...

Angel's interruption snapped her out of whatever thoughts she was having. She blinked a few times and turned to look at him, fingers frozen on Aaron's face. She smiled a very edged smile and slowly moved away from him, suddenly reminded that they weren't alone.

Trying to chuckle despite the tension, Piper moved to stand up from the shadow bench. "Ah, well," she said, not really sure what else there might be TO say.

Angel watched the two for a moment and called out again.

"Soooo... Y'all gonna kiss or what? If so I can leave..."

After a moment of pause he added.

"I don't wanna throw off the setting or anything. Ya know be a third wheel and all."

Then he would snap his fingers and point at Aaron.

"Most of all I don't want to throw off your game, no need to ruin the mood as it were. So just say the word and I'll make myself scarce so you can get your smooch on!"

There was a large part of him that just wanted to tell Angel to shut up already. Even aside from the circumstances, which had Aaron going almost crimson, did the man have to be so loud and crude about it? Why not sneak into the Director's office and start screaming into the PA system while he was at it. He'd been too caught up in the moment, it wasn't really considerate to get like that when other people were in the room, but seriously?

Aaron let Piper detach from him and the bench vanished with a wave of his hand as he got to his feet. Well, she was standing okay at least. She said something and it did nothing to break the awkwardness. Not her fault though. It hung over them longer than he'd like, before he cleared his throat.

"So." Faltered again, had to take a second. He tried to look at her and pretend Angel didn't exist for the moment. "You want to...?"

He was going for "get out of here" or "go get checked on", or at least something along those lines, but his train of thought balked halfway through. It probably came off much more ambiguous. He nodded to the door to try to get his meaning across, since his words were tripping over each other.

Angel had a change of heart after seeing Pipers condition, and seeing that Aaron wanted to take her out... Nope. So Angel made his way over to the two of them and promptly picked Piper up and tossed her over his shoulder.

Piper: "Ow!"

"Ok so nope. Drawing the line there buddy. Sorry to say but she is too banged up to go anywhere but bed."

Piper would be trying to adjust herself while Angel kept readjusting her. Piper would let out a string of ows and oofs during the maneuvering.

"Shhh... It's ok I got you. Now Aaron if-"

Piper: "I can walk myself thank you!"

"Of course you can sweetie now quiet down so I can talk to Aaron."

Angel would say patting her on her rump.

Piper: *Gasp* "Hey! That's my butt!"

"You don't have one hun."

Piper would start fighting again only succeeding in making herself hurt more. Before repenting and just staying still on Angels shoulder.

"Anyways Aaron as I was saying. She needs to rest so if you want to continue being sweet you will show up tomorrow, promptly, at 2 in the afternoon with chocolates, flowers, and a HAND WRITTEN apology note explaining how sorry you are for doing this to her. Now you should go rest yourself."

With that Angel would turn around and start walking out even if Aaron tried to speak to him he wouldn't stop unless Aaron physically stopped him. Piper would just huff and fold her arms too tired to stop Angel. But when Angel turned around she would see Aaron and wave at him good bye.

"What."

Angel must have misread what Aaron had in mind or something, but whatever the various parties' intentions, between the abruptness of it all and the weirdness that had unfolded just a few minutes ago Aaron was left standing there somewhat slack-jawed. He let it all wash over him without more than a few awkward blinks. The part of him that was still his father's son wanted to grab Angel, haul him back into the room and give him a piece of his mind, drill into his head that Aaron wasn't the pig he seemed to be being taken for. He'd been at a loss for words, but all he'd wanted was to get her seen to, make sure she'd be okay.

What good would that do, though? And so he stood there, numb, and barely even waved back. Whatever'd been into him today, whatever else was going on, everything had been just too strange - and this, coming from the kid who saw weird things every day - for much more than a blank stare to register. He couldn't feel like he wasn't the bad guy here, not with everything going on today - that all wasn't him.

He hoped it wasn't, anyway. Was he really the no-good bully deep down, no better than the people he joined Paradigm to fight against? Maybe he really did need rest. Rest, and some time alone to think.

Aaron unwrapped his hands, but there was a bag in between him and the shelves the wraps belonged on. He smashed it out of the way with a left hook, left it to swing. When he left it still swayed back and forth like someone'd hit it with a sledgehammer.
