Don't falter, don't lose your nerve. Dad's worked with her a lot, she doesn't hate you or anything. Just get to the point.
"An agent, a friend of mine," was Angel really? Well, that didn't matter right now, "has disappeared. I think something bad might have happened to him. I'm putting together a team to find him, and rescue him if he's in trouble, so I'm starting with people I know are good scouts and trackers. I thought I'd ask for your help; you're the first person I thought to ask."
He forces himself to meet her eyes. "I know this is asking a lot, and no doubt you have your own problems to deal with - I don't exactly plan to make a habit of running to you every time something happens. But for this, I need people who I'm sure know what they're doing, who won't do something stupid like rush in with half a plan, and if things do get hairy I know they can handle themselves. You were the first name to come to mind."
He meant it, too. He knew she was competent, he'd heard stories of her skills, so it'd seemed natural to ask. "Obviously, I'm just asking, I can't tell you to do anything right now, but I'm trying to think about who might give the mission the best chance at succeeding. I'd owe you for helping me out with this."
"Correction," she said in that same cold tone. "You'll never be able to tell me what to do."
She managed to keep most of her rage in check, but when he met her eyes, he would see the cold, calculated killer his father knew well; the assassin that got in and got out and never left a mess behind.
"Contact Zoharin Cross and Eric Phillips. They should be able to help you. And Silverman," she didn't even call him agent in that moment, "don't be dumb. Take some muscle with you."
"That's not what I meant - I was just saying I'm pretty much just asking you a favour."
He managed not to flinch away from her gaze, though. If he could talk to Mr. Amtrum, he could talk to her, especially given he'd had nice interactions with her before and knew more about her from his father - she could be a cold assassin, but she probably wasn't going to cut his throat just for going to her about this.
She told him who to talk to, when she could've just told him to shove it. Zora and Eric, he'd worked with them before, if briefly. Good people, and a Cross was bound to be good at what they did. And of course they'd need more fighters than him, who knew what they'd run into looking for Angel - had that been a moment of concern, the way she said it?
Maybe it was his imagination, maybe not. He couldn't help a glance at the huge man who was, evidently, her roommate, as she mentioned muscle, but that guy didn't really look receptive to him asking. Besides, he wasn't talking to Aaron, Agent Campbell was.
"I'll talk to them, thanks for the point in the right direction, at least. As for muscle, I've got a couple ideas, and I'm sure I can find some people."
Obviously, arguing with her on this point wasn't a good idea.
She gave him a firm nod, her body completely still otherwise. He took her advice, at least. That was good. Smart. And he managed to keep his gaze fairly steady. That was brave. Despite her bad mood, her gaze softened.
"Use me as a last resort, Silverman," she told him, voice still as cold and edged as before. "I do not go out on simple retrieval missions, especially when you don't actually know if an Agent is missing. I am a spy, Silverman. An assassin. Not a labrador."
She gave a shake of her head and a soft sigh. Kids these days...
"Go assemble a team. If you feel their skill set isn't strong enough for you to locate and rescue this agent, then come back and see me."
Venus glanced to Jayshawn with a nod and a little half smile, before turning and walking into her room, leaving Aaron in the common area of the Pod with her roommate.
She was already walking away as he turned to spoke, but if she looked back he'd catch the nod he shot her way, hopefully respectful, before turning to go. It had probably been too much to hope for, to expect a battle-hardened spy and assassin would just be free to be randomly called upon like this, but it could have gone worse. She gave him something to work with.
And she didn't try to stab him, either.
If the big guy didn't stop him, Aaron wasn't going to overstay his welcome. He'd simply walk out, shutting the door gently behind him as he went off to find his team.
