She sighed, and then started her tale. Once she started, it was difficult to stop.
She told him about her absent father, her neglectful mother, her difficult time being in the church. That was the easy part.
When she told about the night she met Jimothy Clavish, she whispered what she had been doing. She hadn't ever gotten her hands on the drugs she had planned to buy, but she HAD planned to buy them.
Then came the difficult part... Explaining how she fell. She tried to talk mostly about herself, then, about the strange obsession she hadn't ever experienced before him. She told him about the things he did that made her think he was a God, talking about Justice and the lessons he taught her.
When she talked about the one time she failed, her voice faltered. Her hand rose and slipped the neckline of her jumper down, exposing the scar he had seen in passing. It was wide and ugly, curving from her collarbone around. "He said I should accept my punishment with grace," she whispered, "and that the next time I failed him... would be worse."
He didn't say anything as Piper (Sarah?) told him, quite literally, her entire story, just listening, letting her pour it all out on him. He nodded, encouraged her, held her closer now and then for encouragement, and just let her talk. Finally, she showed him that scar, and he had to fight down the flash of anger so he wouldn't risk her thinking he was judging. Not when she'd just forced everything out into the light for him.
"It won't be, because he's not going to lay a finger on you again. Trust me on that." If that son of a bitch tried, Aaron had half a mind to give him some scars, see how he liked it. He went quiet for a bit after that, just sitting with her and being silent support, before he managed to speak again, softly. "You've been through so much, and you're still here, still trying to do the right thing. Don't let anyone try to tell you you're not strong, because you are - stronger than I think I'd be, if I had all that to deal with."
Definitely stronger than Jim, he wanted to say, but that might not help. That all brought them back to that encounter outside the hospital, though, so he braced himself. "It's asking a lot, after everything you just told me, that whole story, but what exactly did he talk to you about, when he appeared yesterday? Tell me anything you feel up to sharing right now."
She stared down at her hands for a moment, her heart pounding so loud, she swore she could hear it. Her fingers curled into her palm, nails digging into the soft skin.
He had told her to betray Paradigm. He had demanded she deliver people to him. He demanded...
"Oh, shit."
It just dawned on her exactly what he had asked her to do. Her eyes widened and she jumped up, rather suddenly. "Aaron, I... I have to look into something."
She swayed slightly from the sudden vertigo, and had to take a moment to catch her balance. She didn't want to go tumbling off the roof. "Who is in charge of missions around here??"
She flinched as he mentioned wanting to tell them. How many people were goingto know that she was crazy? That she had almost become a traitor?
She shook her head. "You go if you need to. I'll email him. I'm going to get something to eat, and then go to my Pod."
Pause. She took a deep breath and moved over to him, closing the small distance between them. If he would let her, she would kiss him, running one hand along his skin, and up into his hair.
She couldn't let the kiss linger too long, even though she didn't want to stop touching him.
"Do what you need to do. Maybe... Maybe you can come see me? After? I don't want to... talk about this, right now. Maybe we can watch a movie."
She really just wanted his company. Of course, it occurred to her that he might feel smothered, or that he wouldn't want to be around after hearing her story. But maybe... maybe he COULD love her, after all.
"Email them both; if he's planning something, and you know what it is, they need to know ASAP. You're doing the right thi-"
And then she kissed him. He let her, let his lips move against hers for a moment, then just as he was starting to think this really wasn't a time for making out she stepped back. Allowed him to take a breath. Relax. Okay, then.
She wanted him to come by, again? Other friends of his were going to start to worry (nah, it'd be fine). After everything that'd been going on, doing teenager things like a normal kid instead of a legacy superhero sounded like just the ticket.
"A movie, huh? Sure, that sounds nice. I'll swing by sometime tonight."
She smiled softly as he agreed. So this was what it was like to make somebody proud, somebody you weren't afraid would kill you. She gently touched his cheek and gave him a nod.
"Thank you, Aaron. We'll talk tonight."
Then, without another word, she left, off to do what she needed to do.
