"Well what ends up happening is you count each card in the deck to get the total value of it. The hire the value, the better your chances of winning and getting a blackjack, since there's more ten and face cards."
Murdoch plays a hand for himself an the dealer. The dealer shows a 10, with a face down card and Murdoch shows a King and a six.
"Ah, I explained this wrong, I feel. Essentially, if you look at the table right now, there's a running count of (-1) Because the King and ten are negative, and the three is positive. The count works based on how many cards you see on the table during a game.
Now you're probably asking, what does that matter? Well, the more positive a running count is, the more high value cards that are going to still be in the deck. The more negative it is, the less, meaning it's easier to get low value or neutral cards."
Murdoch hits, and gets a six, putting him to nineteen.
"Now the running count is zero again, and since I'm so close to going bust, over twenty-one, I'm going to stay. Now the dealer has to hit until he's over a certain value, usually seventeen."
Murdoch flips the face down card, which is another ten, putting the dealer at twenty, and beating Murdoch's hand.
"When there's more people playing, you can get a more positive or negative running count. The higher that count is, the better the chance of me 'hitting' not being a bust. So if you're close to twenty-one, but the running count is high, you should probably hit.
On the flip side, since the dealer needs to play until seventeen, he has a better chance of busting, with all those high cards in the deck. So when you have negative running counts, it's better to play it safe."
"The theory is actually pretty easy. I think you could pick up the idea really quickly. The real skill is how fast you can count everything. The dealers are incredibly fast at their job, and hands go by very quickly. So there's a skill level I still need to practice."
