Evie left them behind to go and do her own research. She still had a little while before she was supposed to go back to Jack. She had things she needed to learn first.
Sitting down at a computer, she typed up everything she had seen in as great detail as she could, including the appearances of the people he made deals with.
Then, that done and those pages printing, she turned to the Internet and looked up the names he had given her, starting with Elizabeth Clarkson, using the birthday she saw on the gravestone.
She gets a news story about an Elizabeth Clarkson holding a fundraiser for refugees from Europe!
Three years later, there's another, much sadder story as Elizabeth was caught by an explosion during one of the Empire's expansion efforts into Sweden.
She gathered all the papers she had printed and brought them back over to the desk so she could highlight the important bits and the things that needed to be paid attention to.
Including the offered deal, the name that was given, and the deaths of his wife and kids.
Hesitating for only a moment, she had one last thing to check. She looked up Kieran Clarkson, first looking for a picture.
Gotta make sure it's actually the same guy.
Then she would look to see if there were any important news articles about him, or anything he had accomplished in a life on the right side of the law.

She printed a picture of the darker hair but didn't other with the gym information.
Gathering that all together, she placed it in a file and logged out, leaving the library behind.
She needed to stop at the cafeteria, ordering a small meal for herself and a slightly larger one for Jack. Balancing his tray atop the folder and having them put hers in a bag, it was easy to carry everything.
Evie sighed softly, using her mad waitress skills to make it upstairs and to Jack's office without incident.
She managed to get the door open, pushing it slightly with her shoulder. She looked a little more tired than she had early in the morning, but she still managed a bright smile and a tilt of her head.
"I brought you lunch." Just like she had promised.
"Kieran was cooperative and allowed me access to his memories. He tried to convince me that he would uphold his end of the bargain through memories of him doing so. I'm not sure I believe them... Memories can be altered."
She shrugged slightly, starting to finger through the pages.
"He wants us to help him take over a country. In return, he says he will give us access to the Empire's 'front lines.' He seems adamant about that, about getting us a place to fight the Empire."

She hesitates, then, and finds a picture of his wife and daughter. She takes a moment to look at the pair, and a sadness touched her features. She ran her thumb affectionately over the picture.
"Yes, Sir," she said finally, and lifted the picture for him to see.
"According to every record I could find, his wife and daughter."
Just to prove a point, she put the picture back into the file and found the copy of their marriage license, showing that to Jack as well.
After only a few momemts, she replaced that and looked over the article of their death. "I found evidence that states they were both killed in an explosion, caused by the Empire.... but that's not all. I was in his mind, Jack. I saw through his eyes, staring at those graves. You can alter memories, but you can't alter emotions. Not like that."
"When I say this, I don't mean it sarcastically, but how would you propose heading into Europe to deal with the Empire?"
Jack asks, leaning against one of the arms of his chair.
"They're fortified, they're actively preparing for war with weaponry at least a decade ahead of us, and they're spoiling for a fight, which suggests that they've found the answer to deal with what caused the cease fire in the first place."
He had a good point with all of that, but uncertainty showed on her face.
"That's a large part of my concern," she admitted, though her voice sounded distant, thoughtful.
"If we bring the fight to them, they have an immediate advantage; it's their home stretch. Kieran said he'd help us get INTO THE Empire, but we don't know if he will help us AGAINST the Empire, or if he'll turn the moment we're inside. And then, we're boxed in, in enemy territory."
She pressed a finger to her lips, balancing options and, at that point, just thinking aloud. "But if we wait for them to come to us, they'll... they'll have access to kill more of us, and civilians, too."
