She'd nod in agreement. She wasn't sure how to handle all the attention she seemed to get since coming here. Mostly because of her power, and not from the people she wanted it from most. But even if she felt somewhat used sometimes, it was nice.
"For instance, objects don't always have others to talk to, or the only way they can be heard is through me as an interpreter. They take a good deal of time talking with me."
She sighs, lacing her fingers together.
"I feel really bad leaving the lonelier objects behind, but objects can't be the only things I talk to. Especially when there're those with more experiences to talk to. I could listen to people for hours."
So long as they weren't doing boring things like sharing stock exchange tips.
"If I had to be honest, it would be hard to with that in mind... But I can't just watch the world pass me by when there's so much to see and know. Surely there are things worth taking risks for?"
"To be honest with myself, I'm not looking forward to being on the field again. Deep down, I dread it. But if you keep it between us... I don't want my parents to think they are right that I'm better off at home. Even if I'm having second thoughts."
Fred smiles, excited to share this biscuit with her.
"It's a cookie that's has one half coated in chocolate icing and the other half coated in vanilla icing. I've always found that people have a preference in how they eat them. Like down the middle to get both flavors, or eating one of the halves depending on which side is their favorite."
She digs into her bag to pull out a small container with two cookies, then offers one of them to Fiona.
"Some eat their favorite side first, or save it for last."
Fred can't help herself feeling curious about Fiona's action, so she speaks up.
"I would ask what the cookies are saying, but I'm afraid of the implications if I eat them..."
What if they do want to be eaten, much like how objects wanting their purpose to be fulfilled? It might still be creepy to eat something you were just talking to though.
The cookies came from a local bakery. Several men and women quickly spread the icing onto the cookies with nimble hands, white side first, then chocolate. Perfect straight lines down the middle. One of the newer employees wants them to be all black or all white, so they'd be easier to spread on. The owner of the bakery overhears him. The cookies have to be half and half. You can't have one without the other. It's how he was taught.
The cookies are put on display for a while, and people buy them along with other goods. One customer comments that the ones in New York are better. Fred comes in and buys a small batch. The cashier comments how she can stay so thin with so many cookies! She shares them with her roommates, she responds. Living on her own! How grown up! Fred takes the cookies back to her pod. She hopes they're not allergic.
Fred wonders if Fiona can hear objects too, but decides against making any more assumptions. By assuming anyway. The vanilla side is sweet, but not too sweet. The cookie itself is moist and breaks off without a sound.
"Ah, you're starting with vanilla. My mother likes chocolate, so she starts with the vanilla side too."
"I usually start with the chocolate so I can save the vanilla for last. When I had my first black and white cookie, my mother broke her cookie in half so we'd have our favorite halves."
Definitely a memory Fred would keep with her. They definitely don't do it as much nowadays the busier her parents got.
