If it had been him instead, things would've been better. She could help people. She wasn't him. He suspected he was agreeing with Mike's basic point but they were using different words for similar ideas.
"Saying I don't know if I mind if I die, not that I'm going to throw my life away. If I were gonna do that I'd just do it."
"Yes. But she was willing to sacrifice herself if she had to for those kids, is my point."
He paused for a long moment, remembering the service, remembering being wheeled out of that school, covered in tiny pieces of what used to be his friend. His voice hitched for a moment before he remembered to be strong.
"...I wish she were here right now. I should've saved her."
"Being faster, or taking point, or standing where she'd been standing. Or leading better. She died on my watch. I stood there and I could save the kids but if I'd been a split second faster she'd be alive too. Or if I'd planned better, or if I'd kept the situation under better control."

Eric wouldn't've had her die on his watch. Goddamn Eric. He wasn't sure he meant a lot of what he said, but he would cut off his right arm to have Eric's ability, or to be him. Why did everything get to fall in his lap, while the world spat in Aaron's eye every day?
