It was a pretty gross trip back in Josh's whale mouth, but, the three musketeers were back home! During the entire trip Jan Di seemed to be avoiding Rhett. Or at least she wasn't looking at him, even when she was telling him where they were going, or answering him if he ever had anything to say.
She takes the two boys to the investigation room, where she was still being pretty quiet, leaning against a wall with her arms crossed.
"I was young when I first joined here. The people I lived with weren't even my family, they were actors. I was told I needed to find out everything about this place, because Paradigm wanted to ruin my parents. If I told anyone, the academy would lock me up."
It wasn't hard to lie to a child.
"When I got older... I could recognize the lies. But when I told them I didn't want to do it anymore, they told me in no uncertain terms of continue to do it or else. But it wasn't me they threatened."
"The two of you were on the list of cannot be touched."
Rhett nods.
"...you remember what happened to the girl who followed me around, Jan Di. She was used as an example of what would happen."
He looks back down at the floor.
"After everything that had happened, I thought... maybe if I went back, I could find something useful. Do something with this... situation, I've been in. It was too late to undo what I'd done for years, but maybe I could make up for it. But I have nothing to show for it. Nothing but that vial for betraying everyone I've ever known."
Jan Di looks at the floor at the mention of the girl. She and Rhett had just spoken of her less than a month ago, so it didn't take much to remember.
She remains quiet for a while and a lot of questions suddenly pop into her head. But she wasn't going to ask them all. There were two things in particular she needed to know.
"When you realized they were lying...why didn't you tell anyone what was going on? If not the faculty, at least US."
"I couldn't tell you. After what I'd done already... I'd already been responsible for people dying. I couldn't be responsible for anything happening to either of you."
