Valencia looks around to make sure no one was around.
"I have some of their belongings. I don't know how much you know of Norbert's family, but I'm not sure how to break the news to them when I return his stuff."
The children in the pictures and this young man... Have they ever known life beyond the Empire, she wondered. What they knew would only come from the killed men. And they were reckless enough to speak up, then attempt running.
"Yes..."
These people appeared to just be civilians. She'd be too lucky to stumble upon a group of rebels from wandering the streets. Her presence being known then traced here would further endanger them.
"I can tell you more, but not out here. Then I'll leave."
"Definitely. I won't be too long. I was only a witness."
She enters the apartment, but doesn't remove her sunglasses. Analog disguises, man. Who knows if the Empire has put out a hit on her and people would turn her in.
"Do you live alone...now? What about Norbert's children?"
"Exactly as I said. They didn't like the higher taxes... My German isn't good enough to understand everything, but there were comparisons to dictators like Hitler. They were pretty loud at the pub."
Both were married and survived by their wife and children. This is going to be rough. She's not sure if she can even face Norbert's family, let alone Tavin's wife. The less everyone knows about her, the better.
ERM. Throughout the years of collecting information from other countries throughout the Empire, are there differences in how the countries are ruled? Valencia needs to choose her words carefully... She's already speaking more English than a typical German.
The countries towards the borders have a much more sadistic attitude towards their citizens, whether it be through ritualistic death cults in Turkey or how Belarus had citizens fighting for their lives in the arena.
The inner countries, while ruled through fear, generally sees their citizens as a labor force, and while rebellion is punished harshly, the citizens themselves are treated humanely.
There has not been any record of civilians in France, however, they all seem to be Chthonic operatives or soldiers.
"The Empire spanned out from France, did it not? It's hard to say how the citizens are living there, but rumor has it that the further out one lives, the less... Favored they're treated. I wouldn't want to live further east... I wouldn't be living at all."
To be fair, if the Empire knew her whereabouts, that would apply anywhere.
