"You're grounded to Paradigm's grounds. We will have people look into Clavish being in Chicago. I don't want you leaving until he is captured or killed. Am I clear?"
"I have missions," she repeated. "I have not proven myself unfit for field duty. I just saved three children's lives. I came to you for training. And you're punishing me."
"You have shown yourself to be emotionally unstable and still connected to a high ranking member of the Cthonic Empire. I don't trust you out there right now. For your safety, or the safety of your teammates. Not until you sort your shit out."
"Our file is outdated. But he can come back from the dead. It is possible he has acquired new powers and other technological enhancements during his time with the Cthonic Empire."
She reaches out a hand as if she were going to touch him, but before she could, she dropped it to her side and her gaze to the floor.
She told Mat about her father, a cruel man by all accounts. She told him of her mother, too obsessed with her religion to care about anyone or anything. She told him about the rape.
Then, she told him about her father leaving and her mother staying in the Church. Nothing he probably hadn't read. But she started talking about the abuse she had kept quiet. How much of a perfectionist her mother was.
It led her through to talking about not having any friends. That all seemed to be easy to discuss.
When she told him about the night she met Clavish, her voice broke. She had been about to buy something, anything, that would get her out of her head. She didn't want to be a part of it.
"He found me," she said softly. "I recognized Him. He must have been watching me for days. I was young. I was flattered. Nobody had ever looked at me like that before. And I hadn't ever looked at anyone else."
She paused, swallowing back fear, fighting the alarms telling her to shut up before she said something stupid.
"I... felt weird, in His presence. I couldn't lie to Him. I tried. I didn't want to be away from Him. It physically hurt. It... It felt like how Mother used to describe God. The Catholic God."
He didn't say anything through her whole story. Just standing their impassively, letting her get it out at her own pace. Even now he'd stay silent, waiting to see if there was more.
She took a deep breath. "It should have taken more to... brainwash me. And the longer I went without seeing him, the less I wanted to be around him."
Her fingers rose to lift her chain necklace from around her neck. She stared at it.
"His puppet, he called me."
The word burned. Her body felt like it was on fire, and the tears started again. This time, when she reached out, she didn't stop. She tried to rest her hand on his flesh arm.
