"Well, if you'd rather go to that, it's fine. I know your friends are important to you. It'll give me a chance to head out before you get there this week."

That day, whenever Jack left his office but before he actually went home, the next time he came back he'd find some items on his desk. One, a bottle of red wine that looks ridiculously expensive, and the other, a nicely wrapped box that, when opened, contains a set of blades. Attached to the bottle is a note, written in French, and then English on the other side, as if the writer had forgotten if Jack could read French.
Director,
I wanted to give these to you personally, but neither you nor your assistant were present! Rather than hunt you down through the Academy, I figured you would inevitably return here before Christmas Day, and thus would find these gifts if I left them in plain view. When I was on deployment, I encountered a collector of fine wines and blades; such a vintage was wasted on him, and let's just say he doesn't need these knives any more! Consider them trophies of war, and besides, I know how much you appreciate good steel. I brought home more bottles, but a sommelier I met says this bottle on your desk is the best of the lot, and you, Director, deserve the best! Let us share a glass one day, and drink to future victories (I am of drinking age in France!).
Although our opinions on some things, particularly our enemies, are very different, perhaps irreconcilable, I still respect you a great deal! If you would have it, I even consider you a friend. I remember when I was a terrified child, determined to fight for those oppressed but unsure how, and how you and the others gave me guidance. I know you do not approve of some of my methods, or of how much I hate our enemy, but I am grateful. When Paris is free, allow me to show you and yours some of the sights! The Republic will live again; if the French survived the Nazis, they will survive Kharne.
Wishing you and your family the happiest of holidays,
When Jack came back from the holidays, he would find everything.... pristine. Every piece of paper that had formed the mountain of paperwork had been put in its proper place, every piece of Christmas cheer had been tucked away for the next year. She had cleaned everything until it shined.
Evie had placed the gifts that had been brought for Jack on his desk, where he would see them right away. The only applications that needed his attention were stacked neatly to the right side of the desk, and everything else had already been filed away.
