Having finally healed from his training incident, Mark is currently standing near the outside wall of Paradigm Academy, throwing all manners of punches. Even though he's been doing it for the past forty five minutes, he's showing no sign of stopping.
After all, this was hardly worth being called training. It was barely maintenance at this point.
"Wouldn't it be better with weights and a bag, at least?"
He'd imagine there's only so much you can get in the way of results with your own bodyweight. "But hey, none of my business. Whatever you do looks like it works."
"Makes sense. That's why I do my running outside."
It's better with the wind on his face and the sun on his skin. Less tedious, too, with the changing scenery instead of just the track's endless loop. A few seconds pass in silence, though, as Aaron realises he has no idea what to say or why he's bothering someone in the middle of a workout.
"Look like you've got it all figured out for yourself, but can't say I've seen you before. Been here long?"
"Still a junior agent, but I've been here for a while. Grew up around Paradigm, so I guess you know who to ask if you ever want to be shown around."
By some standards, yeah, he's an experienced agent. He's even been in the field now and then! But he doesn't feel comfortable referring to himself as such, not compared to so many of the others.
"You should get out and about a little more, it'll be good for you. What's your name?"
He says simply, a little surprised. This was the second time he'd had to introduce himself, it was... weird. People usually just referred to him as 'hey you', or already knew him.
Mark doesn't ask, so Aaron doesn't supply his name, not yet. It feels like hijacking the conversation. Besides, he can relate to that question Mark just asked. He's found himself wondering the same from time to time. Worth trying to answer, though.
"Well, when we're out in the field we're expected to be able to work together, and knowing the people you might be out there with makes it a lot easier," he says, with a shrug. "Besides, people aren't meant to spend all their time on their own. We're social animals."
"Not all of 'em, there's a lot of people here, but it helps. Especially since if you know your teammates you'll know how to make their strengths and weaknesses work with yours."
It's not mandatory, of course, but he did ask and sounded like he actually wanted Aaron's opinion. "Ever hear of the Sacred Band?"
"It's just an example. Back in ancient Greece, Thebes had a force of 300 soldiers, hand picked from pairs of male lovers, the theory being a soldier will fight even harder to protect someone so close to them than they would have before. It worked; those guys were unstoppable for a long time."
Of course, eventually Phillip of Macedon killed them all, but still...
"You don't have to take it that far, but my point is making some connections might help you a lot, as an agent. We draw strength from things like that, as people. Do what you're comfortable with, though."
