Well if that training session made anything clear to Eric is was that he needed to get in better shape. Because as it is now he couldn't even pull up his friend if he was falling down a pit of doom! The only problem with getting in better shape was he didn't really know where to start.

The gym was full of weight machines, barbells, and dumbells that he could only stare and try and figure out what he should be doing first.

Eric would see Aaron off in one corner, doing squats!

For such a slender-looking guy, he was pushing some serious weight.

Well that was clearly too advanced for him then. So yeah... He'd just kind of meander around. Maybe if he looked at the equipment intently enough it would count has having gone to the gym.

It didn't count! There were some dumbbells around, sorted in order of weight along various racks, some kettlebells, various machines, a punching bag in one corner, and in general everything you'd expect from a well-stocked gym.

Only Aaron was there at the moment, his breathing and the occasional grunt of effort the only noise cutting through the air. He hadn't noticed Eric yet, but Eric might notice that after five reps he stops, and racks the bar! He wouldn't take the weights off just yet, though, closing his eyes and breathing slowly as he lets the recovery time go on.

He only half glances toward Aaron. He didn't really want to draw much notice to himself until he figured this all out. He'd slowly pick up one of the dumbbells. One of the light ones. Or at least he thought it was going to be light. The ten pound dumbbell just felt weird. It wasn't really hard to hold it, but it didn't feel like it was actually ten pounds.

Obviously he was not good at judging weight.

The weight should be on the round bits of the dumbbell, written in a large font!

He saw the number, but it still felt heavier than it would in his mind. He'd just awkwardly start lifting it with his right arm. His form terrible.

"You're gonna hurt yourself with form like that."

Aaron had noticed him when he started the next set of squats! If Eric were to look over, Aaron'd look sheepish and rack the bar again, apologetic.

"Sorry, not trying to be down on you but I thought I should say something."

"You could still pull a muscle, or strain something. You new?"

He looked new, with form like that.

Clearly that's what he meant.

"Oh."

He laughed.

"Yeah. Thought it might be a good idea after the other day."

He'd look down at the dumbbell.

"So how long does it take to get buff?"

Probably like a couple of weeks.

"Not gonna lie, it's hard work and it can take a while. It's not even just working out, you gotta eat right too. Come here and I can show you some stuff."

He nods to the squat rack! Meanwhile, his shadow starts taking weight off the bar and putting it back where it belongs. Best to squat with an empty bar when you're learning form.

He groans. This was going to take forever. Why couldn't he just be a lump? He put's the dumbbell back and approaches Aaron, waiting for him to finish.

"Get under the bar and hold it like I was, on your shoulders. Squats are one of the best exercises you can do, they work your whole body. You have to do the form right though, or you'll hurt your knees and possibly your back. That's why you're starting with no weight."

Aaron stands across from Eric, takes a stance like he's holding the bar, and demonstrates the proper form with his bodyweight! "Keep your head up, looking forwards, back and shoulders straight as you can. Keep your feet shoulder width or a bit wider, put your feet out about 45 degrees. Breathe deep, contract your abs, and go down like you're sitting back on a chair behind you; get your thighs parallel to the ground then straighten up. Breathing's important - in on the way down, out on the way up. Got that?"

"Uhhhhhh. Sure."

He'd try to follow the instructions. But his back wasn't straight, his head wasn't level, and his feet were pointing in weird angles.

"Straighten up and keep your head level! Stop for a sec and look at this."

Aaron stands in the proper stance! "You want to look like this when you're squatting. Maybe it doesn't seem like much now, but little mistakes with little weights turn into big mistakes when you lift big."

And that bar weighs 45 pounds, so it's not exactly tiny.

He shifted to try and adjust the bar on his shoulders and he'd try and mimic the stance.

"God I feel like I look so dumb right now."

"This is a gym, not a runway, man."

Aaron gives him an understanding smile! If he hadn't been working out with Mom and Dad almost since he began to walk, he'd have a harder time with this stuff.

"Don't worry about it. Get the form right and you will get stronger, without getting hurt doing it."

"I know it's a gym."

He frowned and huffed. Shifting his weight again. Getting closer to the right stance.

"Just making a point. Don't worry about how you look, worry about doing it right. We all start somewhere."

Aaron would check Eric over a few times, making corrections where he sees fit! "When you feel like you're ready, give me a set of five. Focus on technique, not speed."

It took another minute and a few deep breaths before he'd try and do the set of five. Though he started messing up on number 3 in how he bent his knees.

"Watch the knees, you're slipping."

Aaron will let him finish the set, but do a bodyweight squat to show him how he should be bending his knees.
