"I'm sure there is. I doubt any system youve gotten into knows anything about me aside from the base essentials." She cocked a brow, wondering if he would take the bait.
"In this market, information goes for information. I'll ask you a question. You determine the value of that question, answer if you choose, and ask a question of equal value. No lying. No gambling. No guessing. It's a trade."
"None. That would leave me vulnerable to hacking, so I break all connections immediately. You aren't the nun type, clearly, but why did you change your name?"
"Piper was given to me. White is extremely common in Australia. Anonymity." For the first time, there was a slight flinch in her gaze. "Who helped teach you your engineering skills?"
Licking her lips, she almost contemplated not answering. Already, Silas knew more about her than she would have liked. "I have people looking for me from back home."
Quickly, she tried changing the subject. "Why are you at Paradigm?"
There was a moment of silence and her discomfort became obvious, thick in the air between them. She had to take a deep breath before trying to answer.
"My mother, my church, and my Sir." She spat the first two answers, but the last was said softly. "And because the first two didn't know I was leaving... And the last will find me, anyways..."
She went silent, thoughtful, out of questions as her mind filled with the image of her Almighty.
Her smile strengthens a bit. "You're smart," she admits easily. "You asked quite a few really good questions. I've got one more, if you're up for it. I don't know if its worth the answer to the question you just asked, but it might get you something."
She didn't bother asking if he was okay with it. She wasn't that dumb.
She nodded slowly, wondering if he was telling the truth. In a way, he was avoiding the question, so she figured she owed him the same.
"My Sir is my Savior, the man who gave me this." Her fingers hooked the chain she wore around her neck and lifted it to show him before letting it drop back against her chest.
