Deep breaths, deep breaths, in and out. Aaliyah continually tells herself in preparation for what she can only assume is going to be the most difficult discussion of her life. The papers from the hospital fluttering in her shaking hands, for the first time in her entire life she is unable to calm them. An uncertain future, one she never expected while the one she had planned seems to be crashing and burning all around her. But even with all that, she is a Marine, Force Recon, and she would prevail in the end. However there is the current matter at hand. Deep breaths...
Aaliyah knocks lightly on the door to David's apartment. She'd left a message earlier that she would be by around this time to talk, specifically that they "need to talk" as all adults know those code words when referencing relationships. In the few moments she waits to be let in, the young woman plays with the engagement ring on her finger before quickly slipping it off and holding it tightly in her hand.
Deep breaths...
((OoC: Figured we'd do this while I get a few things sorted out with the new character.))
David opens the door, dish towel in hand. He gives her a very quick kiss on the forehead as he turns back around and leaves the door open, heading for the kitchen.
"Look, I know you're probably mad about the other night. I shouldn't of said what I said, but you know how Kras gets me all fired up." He pulls something out of the oven, still avoiding looking at her for the most part.
"To show how sorry I am, I attempted cooking. It's chicken cordon bleu. Or...it's supposed to be." He sets it on the counter with a disappointing look before finally settling back on Aaliyah. He only now notes her expression.
She slowly follows him in, a frail pitiable smile crossing her face as he apologizes. Something that might have seemed so massive just a few hours earlier, now so insignificant. She doesn't go to far from the door after shutting it.
"David, it's... it's nothing that you did. You've been great."
She gets momentarily choked up. Deep breaths, just like a bandage. Oh please! This is nothing like a bandage, a betrayal so heinous it made her sick and yet she couldn't say that she wished it never happened.
"It's about what I've done. Something that..."
Aaliyah almost wants to berate herself but it is no longer place to do so.
"I just got some test results back from the doctor."
Two words, two words that would ruin everything. No more stalling.
"I'm pregnant."
And since they've have yet to be intimate, he'll know it isn't his child.
He's been great? Uh oh, when she's nice is when she's really mad. How to talk yourself out of this one David...
He opens his mouth to speak, but then she mentions test results. His first thoughts fly to that she's sick, that he's going to lose her. Then it comes out and it feels like he just took a gut shot.
"You...what?" He stares blankly a moment. Then he suddenly grins because he does know they've been waiting for marriage, despite his continual attempts otherwise.
"That's not very funny, Aaliyah. I probably deserve the scare, but Christ." He sighs in relief.
Aaliyah places the papers she's been holding on the counter. She had a feeling he wouldn't believe her, and given the way she acts about it who would. The papers are the results, a positive pregnancy result from blood work.
She just watches him, not saying anything further. What could she say? Her face holds a rather somber expression as she waits until he's read the results.
David sets the papers down very deliberately, clearing his throat as he processes it. They haven't been that intimate. Aaliyah had always wanted to wait til marriage so then...
"How? Why? What happened?" He studies her face, looking for signs of assault.
She looks distressed but not from assault, it is from the fact she knows she's breaking his heart. She wants to explain, though that wouldn't make things better, but she can't or more so won't.
"It just... happened. I'm sorry."
It's a cop out, which probably makes her sincere apology sound hollow. Is she supposed to say that passion got the better of them while out there together? Would that make it more bearable? So many questions and so few answers, her silence a conscious choice to hide the details from the world.
He stares at the ring, then to her, and back. After a moment's pause, he picks up the dish of chicken and throws it hard into the side walk, shattering it into pieces.
No argument from her. Aaliyah stands in silence as David goes to storm out, knowing full well she would have done the exact same if the situation were reversed. A lump catches in her throat at his declaration, though it's what she deserves. She takes a deep breath and nods to David as he pauses at the door.
He slams the door, never to set foot in this apartment again. A week after this point David has John and Chris clear out his apartment and ship his stuff to him upon asking for redeployment.
