She chuckled at Arman's sudden departure, not sure if she should take him seriously or not. She had half a mind to mutter something under her breath, but...
Dan was standing outside the door, leaning against a wall and listening to them talk. Despite their conversational tone he could feel a sense of camaraderie. Friendship. These people cared about each other and called each other friend.
If he hadn't put that woman through the wall, would Miranda be in a bed now?
Would she still be alive?
The other kid left, and Dan just stayed where he was. Once the halls were empty again and they continued their laughter, he would take three steps in the opposite direction and vanish into thin air.
This wasn't the place for him right now.

"Thanks man. I'll be here for a bit" - well, probably just today, or a little into tomorrow; the docs said he'd probably be good to return to the pod tomorrow, they just didn't want him straining himself for a few days so he could get enough rest - "so you can always swing by if you like. I'll have 'em call you if I need anything."
He'd give Mike a thumbs up and lay back on the bed, propping himself up a little with the pillow as he ate a bit of the applesauce. It wasn't like he couldn't have solid food, but the thought was definitely appreciated, and his body didn't mind not having to do too much work when one of his last clear waking memories was blowing up.
Piper raised a hand to silently wave to Mike, more than she had done... Well, since their first and really only encounter. She wiggled her fingers before looking back down at her book, trying not to pay too much attention to either of the boys.
Still, she noticed that Aaron had gone back to the applesauce, and she smiled a gentle sort of smile. "I always went out and got applesauce when I wasn't feeling well," she said softly, in way of explanation.
"Definitely hits the spot, and I appreciate the thought. Going out of your way for little old me."
Laughing stung a little, so he gave her a teasing little grin instead. But in all seriousness, she'd come down to check on him, to make sure he was okay, even brought him a little food. She hadn't had to, and she still did it. Aaron would be lying to say being thought of didn't lighten his heart a little; he didn't do all the things he did for praise, but that didn't mean it didn't feel good to be acknowledged. He'd have another spoonful, ignoring that applesauce really wasn't his jam most days because this time it felt great, and let the smile soften.
Her smile slowly faded upon her face as she looked at him. They were finally alone, nobody else in the infirmary, and she could say whatever she wanted, but... All the urge to yell had faded away into nothingness.
She reached out to gently brush locks of hair from his face, an almost motherly gesture, and a sadness touched her. "I'm sorry," she told him. "I'm sorry I wasn't there... That I didn't help."
Piper knew she was supposed to be there, that she was supposed to go with and help those children. She knew they expected her to be there. She sighed softly and moved her hand away from him, thinking about the others that had been there... The others that were hurt, the girl that had died. That could have been anyone..
...Nevermind, he was gone, leaving Aaron's mouth half-open in reply. Aaron hoped he didn't think it would be that easy, after what he pulled. Aaron definitely had business with that man, what with general obnoxiousness and putting those kids in danger by deciding to ditch everyone and play Rambo.
But since he was gone, it left Piper and her words. If she was supposed to be there, it was the first anyone told him, he was pretty sure the people who arrived at that school were just the first Paradigmers to hear about it. But the concern and regret in her voice kept him from pointing that out. It felt like putting salt in the wound.
"Hey, it's fine. You couldn't know anything happened." He tried to give her a little grin, ease the worries a little. Even though someone else came out of that school in a body bag, right behind him. "Besides, we won. All those little ones, safe and sound."
She stared at Angel for a moment, watching as he backed away from the infirmary door. She sighed, just about to give up, when Aaron spoke again, smiling at her. He was sitting there in the bed, he had witnessed the death of a friend... And he was trying to comfort her.
And this was one of the reasons she cared about him so much.
She leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss upon his cheek, a silent "thank you." Then, Piper stood back up from the little chair at his bedside. "Let me go get Angel," she said. "He's probably worried about you."
She was already walking towards the door, going after him. Then, she snickered, despite herself. "Besides. I'd like to see this."
Aaron wasn't sure how Piper knew there was a 'this' to see, but whatever. It'd keep his mind off things, and however long it took her to bring him in, maybe Aaron could use that for some quick shuteye or something. Everybody wins.

She made it into the hallway, raising a hand and calling out to her Podmate. "Angel!" She leaned against the wall, not going to literally chase after him. "Angel. You actually didn't interrupt this time. Come on back."
"Keep talking down to me. See how that ends for you."
He would get right up off this bed and smack Angel in the mouth if he had to. He did have a point though, there was a lot Aaron needed to get out - and now that he'd gotten himself started, well, it was going to be hard to stop.
"I had the plan I had for a reason. We could have gotten in there, gotten the kids out, taken care of everything, easy."
Could they have? That teacher still would have died...
Plus, you know, never assume something Paradigm-related would be easy.
"You're the one who randomly went off script. The one who decided to charge them head on and make us wade through a whole platoon of those clones. Without that we wouldn't've had to rush, and we could've dealt with the two in the classroom far better than we did. Maybe that's my fault, as team lead I should've kept you in line," not to mention he should've noticed Angel had wandered off to pick up the phone, "but you're goddamn lucky if, when I give my report to Director Gavyns, I don't tell him you're too reckless ever to be trusted in the field. What if, instead of spending so much time fighting you, those clones went back into the classroom and shot everybody, huh? What if that masked lady heard what was going on and decided to explode immediately, instead of waiting as long as she did? Did you spend even half a second thinking about that? About why I wanted us to sneak in, instead of smashing through a wall? I specifically asked you if I could trust you to be subtle, and you lied right to my face."
Yup, it was all coming out now. His fists had clenched at some point, and his arm was shaking, even as his voice chilled. Angel might have heard it as a slightly similar tone to when he stood up and told exploding lady he would personally end her. "Next time we're in the field together, if you don't do exactly what I say when I say it, I will kick your ass. Do we understand each other? And I don't care what else you have to say - all I want to hear from you, right now, is 'yes' or 'no'."
"Sir" was optional.

Piper stood in the doorway of Aaron's room, leaning against the frame and listening. By now, she's heard the news reports and the other students talking, but it wasn't until right then that she really had the entire story.
Not to mention, it was sort of entertaining to see Aaron get so upset.
While the lecture continued on, Piper checked her Podmate's condition, obviously eyeing him to see how he was fairing after the mission.
"I realize that you expect me to cower and say 'yes sir I'm sorry sir let me kiss your feet sir' but no. That's not what's going to happen. Now be a man and listen to me since I had enough courtesy to listen to you."
Angel stood up and stared down at Aaron in bed. It wasn't to be intimidating it was just so Aaron would have to focus on Angel while he spoke.
"1. You made no plan, you cooradinated nothing with your so called team. 2. I heard the phone ring just like everyone else. Just. Like. You. I answered after everyone left because I felt it was important to keep them talking possibly cause a distraction. Miranda would have been better for that don't you think? So shouldn't you have made that call? That way I could have been with you and she outside. She was the one that recognized the cloning dude so she could have warned us right away instead of attacking. Don't get me wrong I admit I shouldn't have attacked without know my target. But even if I didn't Arman was still going through that door and HE made that army I made 2 and realized killing was the only way that they didn't double. So I killed one and Arman made an Army but it's nice that as a squad leader you can choose who to cast blame on. But back to my last point. If Miranda had been told to Answer that phone she could have played diplomat. She could have probably saved that teachers life. She could have warned us and possibly even stopped Arman from causing a clone army. But most of all she would probably still be alive right now. Who knows maybe I would be dead saving a student instead of her and you would be yelling at her about my death. But you know what? You didn't make the call. So now you are trying to take out your rage on me. But honestly I was just filling a gap in YOUR plan that you were going to happily leave open, and I may not be a squad leader but personally having holes in your plan seems to be a bad idea."
Angel sighed and took a breath.
"I'm not trying to sound like I think I'm better than you. I'm admitting I made mistakes. But at least I know why those mistakes were made, and now so do you. I have no interest in a debate with you so I'll make it simple. I return your yes or no question. Do you disagree with me?"
Whatever answer he recieved he was prepared to answer Aaron's.
"I realize that you expect me to cower and say 'yes sir I'm sorry sir let me kiss your feet sir' but no. That's not what's going to happen. Now be a man and listen to me since I had enough courtesy to
That was where a covering of solidified shadow would form over Angel's mouth, muffling everything else.
"You talk too much. Piper, get him out of here before I do something I don't want to."
Aaron was sitting up in his bed, now, looking at Angel as if he might lunge for his fellow agent's throat. Despite that, he never raised his voice.
The beast sensing danger would push it's way through claws protruding and teeth sharpening it clawed at the shadows and if it didn't let go it would use sheer strength to move forward to get closer to Aaron!

The second the shadows moved, so did Piper. She seemed to disappear from sight and reappear just beside Angel, the closest she could get. Then, it took less than a second for her to get between the two boys, throwing up her hands. "Woah!" She shouted, surprised at the venom that came from both of them.
She looked between them before giving her a shake of her head. No way was she going to let this continue. Neither one was in the condition to fight, and really... She didn't want them to fight. Her eyes, clear with focus and determination, flickered first to Aaron.
"You're a squad leader. You also brought up good points. But don't quiet somebody, love, even if you don't like what they say."
Then, she turned to Angel, not waiting for a response.
"And you were part of the squad. But if the rumors are true and you two had a few... Uh... Others, on your team... Then you were swatched before you even started."
Keeping her hands up, ready to push either back if she needed to, she continued, voice softer. "Neither of you killed Miranda, and you're both blaming each other. That's unfair. You're both as responsible for her death as I am, or Rebecca, or Fi. Which is, if you can't tell... None. Now, please," she turned to Aaron first. "Relax a bit. Lie back down... Don't hurt yourself." Then, she looked at Angel. "And keep your voice calm. Let's talk about this respectfully. And power down, both of you. For gods sake."
It was just a covering over Angel's mouth, as if an incredibly strong man were keeping his hand there. It wouldn't move, but Aaron looked completely unintimidated by Angel's advance. Technically, he wasn't in any danger, Aaron had just stopped him from talking. If Angel continued to move forwards, the muffle would press up and inwards to force Angel's head back, but with Piper's intervention Aaron didn't plan to do anything else just yet.
Angel wasn't in control but the beast recognized Piper and it hesitated. It didn't understand her words but it understood she was upset about something and from the look in her eyes she was upset with him. But as much as it wanted to comfort her there was still something that could harm the body and it looked like the male on the other side from Piper was the one who wanted a fight. The beast didn't understand what was happening but after a few moments of deliberation it retired to the back of Angels mind giving him back control.
So now Angel was sitting there waiting. Powered down but still had a shadow over his face. Because for whatever reason Aaron seemed to think he was king of the world and all should love and obey him, and anyone that could speak out should be silenced. Some squad leader.
She watched the Beast as it retreated, the anger still present across his face. She kept the gaze held for a moment longer, offering him a slight tilt of her head, making sure he was okay.
Then, she turned her attention back to Aaron, lowering her voice. "Please, love," she said, slowly beginning to lower her hands. "Just lie back down and let the shadows drop. Come on, boys, we're in an infirmary."
One more glance between them, before her eyes settled back to Aaron. "Please."
