Taner was up well before the sun on this particular cold late fall morning. Old habits are hard to break, even when you want to, but considering that this particular habit had allowed him to achieve his goals so far there was no point to break it. That said, he didn't set an alarm to be up this early, waking up at five am was sleeping in. He checked his school work was correct and done before a few early morning pushups and situps to get the blood flowing. He threw on some cold gear underarmor beneath his shorts and sweatshirt before heading out for a five mile jog around the campus grounds.
The sun is just breaking the horizon as he finishes his jog at the front fountain of the academy. Taner places a hand to his throat to track his pulse while coming to a stop, as well as the time his jog took. Five miles in forty three minutes wasn't too bad for a cold morning jog.
Piper's own early morning jog hadn't had her cross paths with the new student, but it seemed they both ended up in the same place. Unlike him, she looked as if she were just dressed for cold weather, and no sweat touched her slender frame. The green haired speedster had decided to sit by the fountain, buddled up in her oversized sweater, and read.
Aaron and Angel were out of the infirmary. Silas and Mike were in it. She had questions to ask somebody she couldn't get in contact with. And she had all but isolated herself since the awkward encounter and her Podmate walking in. Again. Sighing, she huddled up in the grass and opened her book once more.
Taner glances at the sitting girl, which seemed like a weird sight. Odd to be up this early and reading outside but to each their own, especially with green hair.
"What ya reading?"
Idle small talk question, in part to forgo praying this morning. He didn't really feel like it.
The Australian girl glanced up from her book, cocking a slight brow. What was she reading? That seemed like the question to be asking... She even managed to close the thick paperback, marking her place with one finger.
"A non fiction chronicling of the supernatural," she said with her thick accent, staring up at him from her little ball of warmth. "Looking into people of the past. Research. What are you doing up so early?"
It wasn't as if she knew him, but it was early for anybody to be awake, especially awake and active. She was used to not getting much sleep and being far too active for her own good.
Topical book to be reading. Taner nods lightly at both that and the girl's accent, interesting. He wonders if she was born abroad or just her parents and she'd picked up their accent.
"Workout. Been on a military schedule for the past six years in preparation for coming here, no reason to stop."
He starts going through a series of stretches to prevent stiffness in his muscles.
"You looking for anything in particular or just general research?"
She watches his stretching with thinly veiled interest. A military schedule, hmm? She had almost forgotten that some people - people like Aaron - wanted to come to Paradigm... That they trained their entire lives, just to end up here. "Hmm... Interesting."
Then, she turned back to her book, opening it back up and reading over the passage she had been on before.
"Personal research," she said without looking up. "Figuring out weaknesses and strengths." Matthew's words repeated in her head and her shoulders obviously tensed. She had started her list, but she needed more information. About herself.
Taner just raises a brow at the "interesting" comment. He's never thought of it like that, since it was just normal to him. But he had to remember that this was no longer a military program so he's the outlier now.
"Struggling in combat?"
He decides to conjecture based on her responses and attitude.
"I haven't participated in combat until I came here," she said, rather simply. She didn't bother telling him that she was planning on eventually killing a teacher. "I've got the wits, the reflexes, and the endurance. I've got the knowledge."
With that, she finally looked up at him, her eyes a shocking grey color, bright and sharp. "So now I need to learn how to think on my feet when I'm not under duress. Application as compared to knowledge."
"You've got some confidence for someone with no combat experience."
He observes with a bit of skepticism, but it's hard to tell what he's skeptical about. Either he thinks she's been in combat or she is overestimating her skills.
"Of course I'm confident," she said, tilting her head slowly to one side as she stared at the stranger. She didn't seem to quite understand why she wouldn't be confident. "I'm learning."
She shook her head, returning to look at her book. "And I have quite a bit to learn about. It isn't as if I have very many people to learn from." She flipped the page, as if emphasizing a point. "Not even here."
"Something that I've been learning through unfair fights and life or death situations," she commented with a slight smirk, thinking once more about Mathew Amtrum. She couldn't exactly say anything about him, about their last spar, but she had obviously taken a lot of his lessons to heart.
"Most of the people here are only interested in fair fights, and because of that, its too easy." She didn't bother saying anything about her confidence, about how she knew people couldn't really hit her unless she let them. She kept that arrogance to herself.
It didn't really answer his question. The girl certainly is good at giving very cryptic answers. He shrugs lightly.
"Well, I guess most people don't want to train for disadvantageous situations. After all, you can't really train for a sniper getting the drop on you."
Despite her demeanor, she wasnt trying to be cryptic. She was just distracted. A bit of irritation showed on her face as she set the book down beside her, seeming to give up on reading.
"Of course you can train for something like that. You can train for almost any situation. And if you actually train for those situations, then you probably won't end up dead."
"You can try, but the simple fact is you can't train for everything. With rifles today, you could get hit from over a mile with ease. Combat is messy, no matter how well you train."
"If you know what you're looking for, it won't be likely they'll jump you. And if they do, you can move." She didn't seem to find the conversation laughable at all. Her gaze was incredible serious and there was no hint of a smile upon her face.
"Of course, if you DONT prepare yourself for that kind of situation, you WONT be ready for it. And you deserve whatever Destiny you're delivered."
He really doesn't feel like arguing further with someone whose openly said they hadn't been in combat. He knows all about what soldiers go through, his mom is a soldier who'd lost her arm in combat. So, it isn't a subject Taner is a fan of to start with nevermind where it's going.
"Best of luck, Greeny."
With that he turns to head inside, classes would be starting soon.
