After the day's classes, and a disappointing lack of getting to do much exercise, Aaron's in the middle of the courtyard, waiting for Director Gavyns! He'd be in workout clothes but it's pretty cold out, so his usual gear is under a hoodie and sweatpants.
He's heard stories of how powerful the Director is when he isn't stuck behind a desk. This could be really helpful.
"Teachers knew I was just out of medical, they took it a little easy on me." Aaron shrugs. He wouldn't've asked them to, but he understands them not wanting to push him too hard. "I'm a little tender in a couple places, but I'll be fine."
He appreciates that Jack asked though, as evidenced by the little smile.
"Well, that makes it harder then. I wanted you to be all warmed up. I'll tell you what, I want you to make the biggest ball of shadows you can, and hold it up high above your head."
"Would've asked 'em to go a little less easy, but nobody wanted a talking-to from Dr. Husher, sir."
He nods, smile still on his face, and bends a little at the knees, closes his eyes to concentrate his power for a moment. Then all the shadows around them start moving, and a cloud of darkness starts to fall over their surroundings until Jack can't see anything around at all, even Aaron himself. Then that starts to move too, raising and folding inwards like the curtains rising at the start of a play, coming up and up until it's above Jack's head and condensing. Aaron hasn't moved, but he's clearly concentrating on making the ball of darkness solidify and take shape, a huge shadowy globe that comes together and starts ascending into the sky.
It's the biggest thing Aaron's ever attempted to make, and he's carefully only solidifying the darkness when it joins together, so as not to knock over trees or anything.
Aaron nods, and keeps condensing. Bits of shadow start to reach the roof before getting reeled in, solidified, and added to the ball. Light can't help but cast shadows, and he can create darkness whole cloth, so he's taking advantage of both sources to add to his creation.
Thank God for art classes. He's treating it like when the teacher has you make those clay pots.
Outwardly, Aaron doesn't react. Inwardly, the mental image jumbles and reforms; imagine a giant man, big enough that this ball's like, basketball-sized, 'kay Aaron? Okay, now imagine that giant squeezing that shadow-basketball as hard as he can, trying to make it tiny.
The ball starts to shrink, without losing any of its solidity. Slowly, at first, but once he gets used to it it starts going much faster.
He's used to dispelling shadows and darkness when he's done with it, instead of making it smaller, but it's doable.
Well, that's a hell of a lot smaller than what he started with, so not bad. He doesn't give up though! Jack might see him frown as he puts more effort into shrinking it further.
Jack hears Aaron mutter something, but can't make out what. It sounds frustrated though.
He keeps trying, lowering the "beach ball" so he can look at it better and stretching out his arms. He doesn't touch it, but starts pressing his hands inwards as if he were trying to crush the ball himself!
It's to help focus the mental image, which he's trying to gear towards tension - to keep everything tightly packed where it should be - and compression.
Aaron's eyes widen, and he makes a sweeping gesture with his arm! It's not necessary for his power, but it's instinctive!
What he actually does, with his power, is dispel all the shadows so they can't do any damage. That's a lot of darkness all packed in, and at the rate it was going he could've had them exploding all over the courtyard.
"No, no. No need to be sorry. That was actually very good. You have no idea how long it took me to condense all my electricity into the palm of my hand without it spraying all over the place."
The praise makes Aaron blush a tiny bit! "I wouldn't've given up, but I panicked a little. Thought it was better to stop than risk anybody getting hit."
Even at his current strength, when he solidifies a shadow and launches it at somebody it can pack a mean punch.
"It's alright. I actually expected you to do a lot worse. This exercise was for two reasons."
Jack holds up two fingers!
"One, to test your control. And two, to make you use as much of your power at once as you can. The first, you can work on in your other training courses or with me. The second, you need to gas from using your power in order to build up more reserves."
"Generally, every use of your power is going to drain you somehow. The more you use it, the faster you drain. The idea is to push as much as you can as fast as you can into a shape, then try and make it smaller."
Jack shrugs.
"It worked for me. Ended up making my best electricity attack with it."
