She had pulled the chair over next to him, but that had been a while back. She had fallen asleep, her arms and head resting on the bed, her hand reached out to rest delicately on his arm.
His groan didn't wake her. She continued sleeping peacefully, a smile upon her lips.
Ken, intent to stifle the panic rising up and urging him to get the fuck up and out of there, would pause and let out a slow breath. He would slide the arm she was touching back to take her hand, before reaching over with his other and gently shake her shoulder. If she would, he would be grinning.
"This bed's big enough for both of us, y'know."
He would, if she let him, gently tug her in to lay next to him. If she did, then he would definitely feel less like fleeing and more like relaxing, his heart pounding.
She would stir slightly, before finally looking up at him with a sleepy sort of smile. She didn't say anything, and within a moment, he had pulled her onto the bed with him.
"Isn't this inappropriate?" She asked, still mostly asleep. She closed her eyes and wiggled slightly, resting her head on his arm and closing her eyes.
He would smile, letting out a slow and rather content sigh as she lay there. He would put his arm around her shoulders so that she could entwine herself into him, as well as rest her head on his chest. He would clear his throat, speaking to himself but also to her, if she heard him.
"Me and you....should have a date."
That's what couples did, right? Or someone you wanted that with...
She let him reposition her as if she were a doll. She didn't weigh anything and right then, it was easier than trying to move on her own. Her eyes closed, she rubbed her cheek against his chest, and let out a soft hum.
When he suggested the date, she smiled again. "Okay," she said with a nod. "That sounds nice."
He looked away, eyebrows coming down as he tried to avoid cooing like a 12 year old prepubescent kid. Leaning his cheek against hers, he stayed there for several minutes until the curtain was pulled aside, the nurse, giving an irritated sigh and statement.
"Mr. Simpson, can you stay out of here for just one week? One wee-"
She froze as she saw Evie, and Ken put a finger to his lips. He spoke softly.
"Make a deal? I stay in bed, without argument, and you let her sleep while you check my vitals."
The nurse pursed her lips....but would give a little nod before bringing everything over that was needed, checking his blood pressure and putting in an IV.
The nurse checked him out and she continued to sleep, her breathing soft and even. She didn't seem to stir at all. She wasn't an extremely heavy sleeper, but as long as they kept things quiet, she would be fine.
The nurse spoke with him at length as she started typing on the workstation, speaking quietly.
"Got yourself a girlfriend? She was in here before. Seems nice."
The nurse glanced at him.
"Little too good for a ruffian like you, if I may say so."
He liked that she included the last bit, as though he had a choice now to say "You may not say so". She'd already said it. Still, he didn't argue with her, instead looking down at the quite small redhead in his arms, not really sure how to answer. He decided to go with truthfully, and simply.
The speaking stirred her, but she kept her eyes closed and her breathing even. She was half asleep and couldn't help but wonder if she was maybe dreaming. What she was listening to didn't make much sense.
She didn't bother to interrupt their conversation, moving just enough to curl her hand against her face. It seemed normal for her to do something like that in her sleep.
"Then ya shouldn't drag it out. You'll just end up hurting the poor girl. No sense in pushing onward when the outcome is already decided."
Ken stayed silent.
"I mean, really, getting her into bed with you. At your age, you should be focused on your-"
"Could you kindly shut the fuck up?"
His words were softly spoke, but the nurse could clearly hear them. She stopped in horror at hearing his wording, teachers and staff generally respected. Ken wasn't one to respect some hag who decided to beat him over the head with her own misguided ideals.
"Now see here child-"
"You've made your opinion apparent, nurse. I just don't care. You aren't my mother or my counselor. So how about you shut your trap and finish doing your work so we can go?"
The nurses faced reddened, and she jerked out the IV, turning and marching away. Ken winced as she roughly tied a ball of cotton around his arm and walked away. Very carefully, he would slither out of her grasp, kissing the hand on his face to let her lay on the pillow. Entirely naked, he would pull the gown off and grab his briefs, pulling them on with his back to her. He would tug on his clothes and walk around the bed, casually scooping her up (slowly) to try and keep her asleep, if she was still there.
When he set her on the pillow, she shifted slightly. That was enough to wake her up, even if the words weren't. She rolled onto her other side and yawned slightly, letting him walk over to her.
She would look up at him with sparkling blue eyes, still tired, when he went to pick her up. Her hand fell onto his arm gently.
"I like you," she said softly, her eyes closing again and a smile touching her lips. "But you don't have to carry me all the way back to our Pod. You're the one that got hurt, Kenny. Not me."
Ken would grin, standing and putting a hand behind his head.
"Ah, sorry. Thought you were still out. You sleep heavy, and you only knocked me out. No biggy."
He would hold out a hand to help her up, intent to lead her out. The nurse would take her arm and look at him like he was poison.
"You be careful girl. Guys like him never end well."
Ken scowled, but wouldn't pull her away, not wanting to seem possessive. The only reason he scowled and was pissed off...was because the nurses fears were already his own.
The nurse touched her and she smiled, resting a hand upon hers. "Thank you for your concern," she told the nurse, "but I'm not worried."
She stood up on her own, without the help of Ken or the nurse. She turned her back to him so she could face her, that smile still on her face, making her look innocent.
"You see, you don't know anything about me or Ken, here." There was no harshness in her voice, no cruelty or anger. "Other than the fact that he keeps ending up here." She giggled, looking over her shoulder at him, leaning back slightly so she could touch him, hoping to make him feel comfortable.
"You think he's a bad guy. You think I'm going to try to change him, because I'm such a good girl. Right?" She laughed quietly and then shook her head. "I'm not trying to change him. I like him exactly how he is. So thanks! For the concern, I mean."
She would move to leave the infirmary, reaching out to grab his hand. "Come on, Ken. I'd like to get home. I'm sleepy."
Ken blinked too, blushed, and grinned, letting her drag him out and flipping the bird at the nurse over his shoulder to get a little payback as he laughed. She might poke him a few more times for IV's but it was worth it to him. He cleared his throat, speaking with much humor and gusto as she lead the way.
"Well, that was badass. You shut her up in a far nicer way than I tried to."
"Did I?" She asked, a smile still on her face as she led the way to the safety of their Pods. Evie was trying her hardest not to laugh, but her face was lit up. It was humorous to her.
She laughed, making her way up the stairs and towards the door. She's innocent. Really.
Ken would chuckle, shaking his head and turning her back in the middle of the hall, uncaring that others were about as he would press her up against the wall next to the door, kissing her again quickly.
"Sorry. Whole, gotta kiss in 24 hours before things get awkward deal. So...y'know, I just HAD to."
She made a noise of surprise as he turned her around and kissed her again, but when he pulled away, she offered him a soft smile.
"No," she said honestly. "I really don't know what you're talking about." She laughed, and it was a gentle laugh. Touching his cheek, she tried not to let on that he was the first guy to kiss her.
"So listen...I'm not so good at the whole dating thing. Not because I've had so many disasters, but because I've never done it. The whole dating thing. But I was thinking...the Adler Planetarium has this after dark deal. You get to watch a show about stars, have a drink or two...might be fun."
Ken never told anyone this, but he was all scientific and shit. He loved everything about space, time and the beyond. Add onto that a massive 360 screen of space....and romance would definitely bud between them.
His eyes rolled closed as he kissed her back, then as she went inside, he planted both hands on either side of the door frame, grinning and watching her head and, when she turned around, her rump, before the door closed he bit his lip and turned around, laughing and giving himself a small clap.
