Valo does his best not to thrash as he starts to panic! His temperature starts fluctuating wildly - the water around Matt's hand starts freezing for a moment before all of the ice around Valo starts melting. He's more making equilibrium than progress, but at least he's hot enough to evaporate the water for now!
Valo still feels like he's drowning and takes a moment to realize Matt let go. After a few seconds, his head just pops out of the water and he fills his lungs. The water stuck to his skin and clothes evaporates almost immediately, and what little ice that remains won't last much longer than ten seconds.
"Why do I have to feel like I'm dying to get to this point? You okay, man?"
"What are you, Wolverine? You'll be fine, looks like. Sorry about that. But thanks."
Valo smiles and reaches out to pat Matt on the shoulder, when he sees the steam leaving his body. His eyes widen in excitement when he realizes he's actually making the whole tub boil.
"Dude! This is awesome! Too bad water doesn't autoignite."
He frowns, then tries to cool down. Setting things on fire on the way back to the tutorial wouldn't be ideal.
"How do I do it, though? I know how to focus, I'm an engineer for crying out loud. But this... I don't know how."
Valo's just glad he didn't get any adamantium claws to his chest while he was being drowned, now.
"I dunno," he shrugs in response. His mind flashes back to his parents fighting one another with him in the middle of it, often literally, and his jaw tenses. "I don't want to get stronger and still not be able to control it. When my dad went unchecked for long periods of time he destroyed like eight of the nine houses we lived in before I went out to college, so he's a testament to the whole metahuman stigma. I just don't want to fall into that same category."
"No, I think it's the title. People don't want to be counseled or consoled. Because once people do talk to either of us, majority fall in love with Dr. Gavyns. My fanbase is much, much lower."
Even after helping people, like Eric! What a jerk!
"So what exactly are you trying to achieve here? Pretend I only got a B- in high school chemistry."
"You should just help out more of the female agents, then." He nods sagaciously.
"So uh, any object's flash point is the temperature at which something gives off flammable vapors. So it burns as long as there's a source. Then there's fire point, which is the lowest temperature for something to burn until put out, also with a source. Last we have autoignition, which is what I'm trying to reach - it's the lowest temperature you can make something before it catches fire all on its own. It burns indefinitely. Putting it out won't work without a huge temperature decrease. That make sense?"
As he finishes, vapors can be seen leaving the pot. It's a start.
