Valo eases up, since Matt won't take the same approach. So he opens his eyes, relaxing, when -
"SON OF A-!!"
He's incredibly surprised by that, and Matt might feel a huge sudden heat wave wash over the immediate area. The pot of oil bursts into flames, and Valo stumbles backward in response. His hand is also now on fire!
Valo waves his arm frantically to get the fire to go out, but it doesn't! The oil is also very clearly lit on its own, so... Mission accomplished, in a sense.
"Crap man, that hurts!"
He's clearly more concerned with the dislocated finger, since his body temperature just increases to match the fire.
Valo groans, temperature fluctuating violently as the finger is reset. His face hits the floor, and he just coughs and wheezes for a few seconds. Finally, he pulls his arm out of his shirt, and thankfully it's not on fire.
"Aaaagggghhhhh," he continues groaning, before flopping over onto his back. He's rapidly trying to cool down to deal with the oil fire.
"I'm just saying it under stress. I'm glad you didn't shoot me."
As he settles down, Valo is finally cold enough to be able to affect the temperature of the oil, so he stumbles over to it and sinks his hand inside. It takes a while, but the fires go out.
"I have a feeling your training experiences aren't always this chaotic," he laughs.
"The last one I did an animal boy tried to rip out my throat. The one before that we accidentally summoned a robot from another dimension that blew a hole through my chest..."
That definitely seems to have calmed Valo down enough.
"So, you're a magnet for bad chaos. I'm curious how you 'accidentally summon a robot from another dimension', too, but the hole through the chest sounds bad enough without having to explain it."
Valo keeps laughing, and he starts putting his stuff away.
"It could just be some side-effect to your power. Inherent bad luck, or something." Valo grins, putting the rocks away and now just holding the pot of oil in his hands.
"I hope the misfortune doesn't carry onto things outside of training. That's the point where I'd get genuinely concerned.
"Maybe I don't need to. Let me repay you for helping me out later, yeah? Maybe there can be one thing that isn't absolute mayhem in your life one of these days."
"That sounds a little funny, don't you think? 'Here, I'll teach you control, and to make it up to you I'll buy you lunch.' Win-win for me, but nah, I owe you this, this one time."
