The day after the mission in the warehouse district, after Aaron'd already submitted a report of the incident, Director Makaila will receive an email.

I think I've done it

Director,

Sorry to bother you, but if you end up having some time, would you be willing to meet me in Tutorial today? I've made a lot of progress on that exercise you showed me.

-Aaron Silverman

There'd be no response if the Director replied, as Aaron sent it and went on with his day. Training, going to class, watching the operatives they'd captured - it would be time to question them, soon, but not right now. Mostly, he dropped by to check with their guards, make sure they weren't trying anything. He'd been doing some reading up on those specific operatives, in the archives, but his mind kept wandering to that flash of red light, all those lives snuffed out in an instant. People he killed.

If he'd been a second later, it'd be him, Evie, Taner and Zora who died, but couldn't he have thrown it into the air? Sure, it had ended the fight, stopped the people shooting at his friends, but if he justified killing by talking about efficiency, was he really any better? He was here to be a hero, not to cover his hands in blood.

Tutorial ended up being his refuge, and whenever Director Makaila dropped in, that's where he would be found, working his thoughts and frustrations out on a heavy bag. He had good footwork, good technique, the kinds of fundamentals you'd expect from someone training his whole life, but he also had serious power in his hands, and he was calling on that. If the Director watched before making himself known, Aaron would spend a few minutes on proper bag work, but gradually more and more punches would be power blows, until he was just standing there whaling on the bag as hard as he could.

Get it all out.

"Alright, let's see what you got."

Jack says as he walks into the room. He didn't feel like creeping on training students today.

Aaron sends the bag flying back with a right cross that looks like he wanted to put a crater in someone's head with it, but at the sound of the Director's voice he puts a hand out and stops it, before taking off the gloves and tossing them away.

"Sir."

He lets out a breath, steps away from the bag, turns to face the Director. Then it starts. The darkness rushes out of him faster than when they had their first lesson, mixing with their shadows and all the others in Tutorial, filling the room with inky blackness until every last bit of light is snuffed out. Then the cloud lifts and condenses until a huge ball of darkness is at the ceiling, and starts lowering towards Aaron's upraised hand, getting smaller and smaller.

It hits beach ball size, still stable, still getting smaller.

It lowers, still condensing.

Finally, at basketball size, it starts to wobble and shake, and Aaron grimaces in concentration, but it lowers all the way and settles in Aaron's palm.

"You said the first part was getting it to fit in the palm of my hand, right?"

A basketball is bigger than the human palm, but technically it fits.

"Thank you, sir. I was planning on it."

Aaron nods, managing a smile despite the mood he's been in all day.

"You said this was the first part. What's the second?"

"Well, the second part involves going further. You're gonna have to trust me that when I do this, I'm using at least the amount of power you're using, if not a little more."

Jack holds out his hand, palm up, and a small, almost pea-sized glowing ball forms in the palm of his hand.

"This much power in that small a space, I really wouldn't want to get hit by that thing."

Aaron watches carefully! He knows enough about science to know physics can be a real bitch! A lot of power in a small surface area does immense damage!

He's still concentrating on holding the "basketball" together, but does try to feel out if he can make it a little smaller without losing shadows.

The ball in his hand flares out small bits of shadow with every attempt!

"Pretty much every part of the lightning spear is made up of the equivalents of this. I just use it in that form because it's easier to throw it and direct it."

Aaron stops trying, focussing on just holding the ball together! It was worth a shot.

"Easier to keep track of a spear than a bunch of tiny 'bullets' of electricity?"

Not that lightning was ever "easy" to dodge...

"Remind me never to get in a real fight with you, sir."

It's an attempt at a joke, given the smile, but it turns back to a frown of concentration as he looks up at the swirling shadowy ball in his hand.

"Hm. It's not a spear or a sword, but I have been thinking about a few different attacks I could do when I have this gathered up. Haven't tried out my ideas too much though, I've been focussing on getting the first part of the exercise down pat."

"None taken. I'm probably already out of my league sparring Mr. Amtrum so often."

Well, he's not "making" something, per se, but maybe down the road...

"You know how it starts splashing around when I've got it as small as I can and try to push it? Kind of like it's under way too much pressure and looking for a way to get out? If I can direct it, and force it all out at once, in the same direction..."

He indicates a Legion bot he'd taken out and put a decent ways away, and shifts his hand and the "basketball" so they're pointing at it. Apparently he'd been planning on showing this move anyway. Steeling himself for a moment, he imagines all the stored shadows and darkness following one straight line, and releases it all in one massive blast aimed at the bot's chest! Since the shadows want to escape anyway, firing the blast is simple, it's just a matter of making sure they all go in the same direction and keep going that way.

The move's first-draft name is the Silverman Buster.

"Glad you say so, sir. I already have some ideas where to go with it other than the big blast, but that can wait until after I've got the technique ironed out. Way I see it, there's a few issues I have to sort out:"

He closes his eyes with the pause, letting himself take a couple breaths. "One: Speed. Building up the power the way I've been doing it in training is a huge giveaway, and if I can't build it up and fire it fast enough people will dodge it easily. Two: I want to make sure I don't exhaust myself whenever I use this attack. Three..."

Aaron looks at whatever is left of the Legion bot after it took all that concussive force right in the chest, losing his smile.

"...I feel like if I hit an actual person with this, it might kill them."

"Yeah."

Aaron goes quiet, staring at the wrecked bot. If the Director's read the report that was turned in, he'll know exactly why that stings so much. Especially after the Clavish encounter.

"Our powers can do terrible things to people. I wouldn't give mine up, but I can't throw moves like this around and think people won't get hurt."

"That's why I'm usually holding back, even on missions. I've never gone 100% against anybody."

Though sometimes that doesn't help, like when you throw a grenade away not expecting it to annihilate an entire group of soldiers.

"This move, I'll practise with it in training, improve it as much as I can, but out in the field I'll save it for when I really need to break out the big guns. Until I figure out how to control how hard it hits, it's too dangerous to just throw around. This isn't my garden-variety shadow bolt, after all."

"Hope so. If I can master this technique, it'll be a nasty surprise for the bad guys."

Part of him's glad the Director has such faith, it's appreciated on at least some level. The gears are still turning in his head, though.

"When you were putting your lightning spear together, first creating the technique, you thought about this stuff, right? How would you improve this? I should work on making the charge-up not so telegraphed at least, and I've gotta make sure I'm not too exhausted to keep going if this move doesn't win the fight."
