"When I first came up with this move, I was more just excited that I'd come up with something like it. I didn't really... worry too much. These days, I've put a lot more work into it, that's why I've got the improved version."
"That work is why I'm asking your opinion, sir. You're the one here who's done this before."
Sure, the Silverman Buster isn't exactly a move the likes of which has never ever been seen before, this first version is basically a Kamehameha but black but he is still putting together essentially a new technique and a bunch of possible variants from scratch.
"Not to mention you've been fighting metahumans for longer than I've even been alive."
If there's anything Aaron isn't, it's a scumbag! "After all the mistakes I've made lately, after I failed to capture Jim or save the defector, I'd been thinking maybe you would think I'm incompetent, a liability. Though I know I have a lot of learning to do."
"Everybody makes mistakes, Aaron. God knows I've made a lot, myself. You just have to make sure the ones you make are ones you're willing to take responsibility for."
...Worse than killing all those soldiers? But the Director had been so patient and helpful with him, and that frown gave him pause. Why should he open old wounds or dig into his past?
Aaron nods too! Everyone picks up things they don't want to talk about if they stay in this job long enough, and not many people had been at it longer than the Director.
Besides, he'd been taught it's rude to grill people for stories.
"Not unless you have any ideas for how I can show Mr. Amtrum I'm not completely hopeless, when he gets back from his holiday."
It's at least a bit of a joke, but the smile never reaches his eyes.
"I'm just keeping myself distracted, sir, and training felt like the best way to do it. A lot of people died in that mission yesterday, been trying not to think about it after I turned in the report."
His eyes fall on the pieces of Legion bot again, and he muses, half to himself:
"That explains how I caught him with my shadow suplex, that one time..."
It hadn't done much of anything, but it had briefly put Mr. Amtrum on the back foot, and that was something. Aaron looks focussed as he gives the Director a grateful nod, as if he's already coming up with a plan.
"I've thought of at least one thing I can do to him, so if I attack from there maybe it can get me started."
"It's the fact he can fight you with the room. I can't do anything when he's in the floor, and if he puts that metal armour on I haven't figured out how to break through it yet - but even if I lose, I have an idea I can use on him now."
Hrm...
"Do you know if he has to be on the ground, to earthbend? Aside from his stone arm."
"I think he wants me to figure out his weaknesses, how to bring him down; he's told me he wants to see something new from me, not just the same old strategy. I know he needs to breathe, and if I can keep him off the ground entirely..."
Well, he'd still have to worry about his earthbending, but it'd be a lot easier. No metal armour for example.
