With two cups of coffee, she made her way to Jack's office. She even dressed the part, though her shoes were flat. She shed her jacket as soon as the warm inside air reached her and grinned as she tossed it over her arm.
She didn't know how he liked his coffee, but she'd find out. Just in case, she made one sweet, with an Irish creamer and a few sugars, and one straight black. He could have whichever he wanted.
Balancing the two cups, she carefully knocked on his door.
Unlike Jack, she looked bright eyed and bushy tailed. She stepped back a bit and motioned to the two cups.
"I brought you coffee, Jack," she said kindly. "I don't know if you like it sweet or black, so I brought both. I'll drink the other while I get to work."
She didn't mention how desperate he looked for sleep, nor how she would rather he take a nap than drink coffee, but...
"Sort of," she admitted, taking the other cup of coffee. "I used to waitress at this diner, and our manager went off on vacation. I sort of took over her position for a while."
She sipped from the sweet coffee, enjoying the flavors.
"I did all of the paperwork and scheduling. They kept me around after."
"I don't know if it will ever be 'fixed,' Jack. It's a dream, but it's not... I don't know."
She smiled shyly and took a sip from her coffee, wondering if she had spoken out of turn.
"I try to focus on just making it BETTER, you know? If I focus on saving everyone, I know I'll always be disappointed. So I focus on saving who I can... That one man, who gets to go home and tuck his kids into bed..."
She smiled. It was how she got through the memories of gore, knowing that she had saved that one man.
"That might be a more realistic way of looking at it, but.... I dunno, I'd prefer that it did happen. I mean, there's got to be an end to it at some point."
She smiled a bit brighter. "Maybe, Jack. I certainly hope so."
She leaned against once of the chairs, knowing that her slight weight wouldn't move it. She rested her jacket across the back of the chair, and then wrapped both hands around the mug.
"Why don't you go get breakfast? I'll clean up, and then you can come back and show me where everything needs to go."
The desk is literally covered with papers, many of them appearing to be completely out of order. Almost as if he had spread out files to look at them, then spread more files out on top of them when they had been delivered.
She waves at him as he leaves, setting her coffee down and getting to work.
Context clues should lead her to which file is which, and from there, she could organize them in the right order.
She wouldn't read each piece of paper individually, but scan over it to figure out where it belonged, then set it in its pile before turning to the next page.
It only took a few minutes for her to get into a rhythm. And a few minutes later, she started humming songs to herself as she worked.
She looks back at him and offers him a wide, bright smile. Probably not enough time for him to actually eat anything, but he trusted her in his office. She gave him a little wave before piecing the next file together and setting it gently on the pile of other fixed files.
"Hello again, Jack," she said, finally not humming anymore. "You're a little messy, you know that?" She offered him an affectionate wink, then immediately got back to work.
She waved him off with one hand, already working on the next few files, her eyes darting back and forth as she scanned the important information she needed for the sake of organization.
"I told you. I like this kind of work." There. Another file sorted. She tapped it gently on the desk to make sure it was perfect and added it to the pile.
