So that was her name. He'd met her before, now that he had a good look he remembered her, but funny how he'd never gotten her name. Never really talked to her. He finally knew who she was, and there she was, nearly dead, by all rights a goddamn miracle she was alive at all. She'd had him dead to rights. He'd drawn on her, the geno wasn't there, so he froze, and she pulled the trigger. He'd been telling himself he could've dodged the beam, that Eric didn't need to do anything. That he wasn't sure he wanted Eric to have done anything. Look at her, so young, and what that gun had done to her. Would he be here, if he hadn't done that? Or in whatever came after this life? ...He'd disobeyed Eric's direct orders to protect them all, because he had a feeling something would happen and if he weren't there to help he would hate himself. And here he was, the only one not injured or half-dead. He'd already seen Eric, but the thought, the enormity of his failure, galled him. But that was him, wasn't it? Knew some clever tricks, but in the end... he would always fail. Always. He knew how powerful these rifles were. He'd heard the stories, and his parents had some at home, war trophies. But he'd never seen one in action, not like this; the little training exercise with Agent Young? That didn't count. Right now, it was all he could do to sit at the bedside and watch, for a time, and see if anything improved. They looked like cats or Pokemon or something. They were telepathic, at the very least. There were corpses in coffins, down there, and these things possessed them. Made them attack us. He pulls up a chair next to Fred, creating an ice drip between them to give her some of his regeneration! The process wasn't nearly as quick as it may sound.
