Of The Month
Ethnicity: Caucasian; largely German with a bit of Polish and Czech
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 310 pounds
Religious Beliefs: Undecided, would sooner believe in Pelor
Sexual Orientation: Asexual, hasn't really found time or interest to explore.
Appearance: Josh is tall but medically obese, carrying more than 300 pounds on a stocky frame. He has dark brown hair that sits a little on the curly side when it gets long enough, which he keeps at about three inches so it can't get too unruly. His brown eyes are set into a round, youthful-looking face and are adorned with a pair of rectangular, black-rimmed glasses. He almost always wears khaki shorts if the weather permits, otherwise sticking to loose-fitting cargo pants of any color other than black. For shirts, he favors casual un-tucked button downs. As blue is his favorite color, that's the color of shirt he'll most likely wear. In the summer Josh likes to wear leather sandals. In colder or rainy weather he wears black work boots with steel toes.
Personality: Josh is kind, caring and just a little bit dorky. Patient to a fault, he enjoys listening to the problems of others and does his best to give out advice, though he admits to not having much experience thanks to his young age. He is also a little on the lazy side and shirks responsibility if he thinks he can get away with it, much preferring to have fun or hang out with people rather than do any work.
Interests: Televised sports (primarily football and hockey - go Packers and Maple Leafs!), playing football, Dungeons & Dragons, hiking, reading
Skills: Despite his figure, Josh has an athlete's endurance and stamina. He's also a pretty darn good linebacker and can lead a charge with the best of them. He's fluent in conversational German.
Abilities/Powers: Barrier Creation - Josh has the ability to create large barriers. These barriers are visible, but are largely transparent and teal in hue. The barriers can manifest as flat planes, arced dishes or even complete bubbled and can be large enough for completely encapsulate Josh, but the larger the barrier, the more taxing it is on his concentration and thus the extents of his powers are limited so. The barriers are fixated on his position and can move with him but cannot be moved independently, rendering them as a defensive tool rather than an offensive one without a great deal of creativity.
History: A native of Milwaukee, Josh grew up in a peaceful Wisconsin suburb with plenty of other children his age to play with. He was a fun-loving boy who liked to run around and play tag and do other things that normal children love to do, but he did cause a mild ruckus when his powers revealed themselves, forming a protective barrier to protect him during a tripping fall. Ever since discovering this ability, Josh has been careful not to trigger it lest he unnerve those around him, developing a great deal of restraint and control over the time he's lived with it.
Because his father was a school principal and his mother was the manager of a local diner, the Eichmann family had the funds to live comfortably and want for little. They weren't exactly rich either, and so they preferred to have only one child, staying frugal with their spending. They were not as stingy with affection as they were with money, raising Josh to be a courteous young man. His easy-going personality and caring demeanor earned him a score of friends. Unfortunately, his increasing weight also earned him some scorn and ridicule, though Josh tended to let much of the bullying slide off him like water off a duck's back.
Josh stayed active as much as he could and had a strong interest in hiking and playing outdoor games with his friends, but had an equally strong rapport with more introverted activities such as sitting in his room and reading. His father taught him to play Dungeons & Dragons (starting with the old editions of course; Josh moved to newer ones on his own, much to his dad's chagrin), and Josh quickly taught the game to friends. His lifestyle was not enough to compensate for his heavy eating and slow metabolism, and so by the start of sixth grade, Josh was declared obese by his doctor.
Josh tried out for the school football team at the behest of his parents and found it to his liking, though he had to take great care not to use his special abilities in response to frequent physical impact. He found success as a linebacker and his increased exercise lent some muscle mass that complimented the generous layer of fat on his body. Josh continued to play the sport all the way to high school, but misfortune struck. During the first season game of his sophomore year, Josh picked up a fumble and, in his excitement, sprinted for the endzone with a dome-shaped barrier in front of him. The phenomenon was witnessed by his teammates and the crowd, and Josh was forced to stop playing football as a meta human.
Shortly after the incident, the Eichmanns were approached by Paradigm who asked Joshua if he would be interested in putting his powers to good use. Josh took the offer under consideration, having feared using his powers for years and had restrained it for a long time, but eventually answered the call. With his ability to protect himself and others from harm, he's come to call himself 'Paladin', a callback to his love for Dungeons & Dragons and games of that nature.
I'm sorry, they're fixed from his location which means they move when he moves. The barriers don't necessarily have to be attached to him, but I wanted to design it in such a way that he could run with a barrier in front of him, but he couldn't 'fire' it as a sort of projectile or anything like that.
