Matt and Warden Schall get back to Paradigm without incident, and Schall has his accommodations seen to! He's ready to be spoken to whenever Matt wishes!
Schall remains standing, rubbing his eyes for a moment.
"I was planning to go to Paradigm eventually, anyway, but I couldn't get out from under their scrutiny. And then your team visited my prison and got attacked by Lars in the tunnels, and I knew the cat was out of the bag. That I had to get moving."
"I suspect it's been going on much longer, but four years ago, I started... noticing things. One of my staff who had joined the year before, after the peace treaty with the Empire was signed, rose through the ranks absurdly quickly, became my head of security, and he seemed to be watching me more than the prisoners. Prisoner headcounts seemed inconsistent, there were people missing that the guards didn't seem to care about. The prisoners I did see were too afraid to look me in the eye, or even make a noise in my presence; I remember a day when I was making my rounds, and walked into the exercise yard, where everyone stopped whatever they were doing and just stared at me. As if I were a dangerous beast they didn't dare take their eyes off of."
Schall takes a breath, pausing to compose himself.
"Naturally, I started looking into things, asking questions. I learned that for years, prisoners have been disappearing in the middle of the night, that the inmates had seen guards in strange armour remove people from their cells. Legends had sprung up about it, speculation as to reasons for it, and ways to avoid it. Some pray, some fashion shivs and carve images into their walls to try to ward off whomever these people are, some just keep their head down as much as they can. I wager this is why things have been so quiet in the prison; even the most hardened convicts here do what they can to avoid drawing attention, and the new blood, the ones full of fire and anger, they get warned by the veterans. They calm down before long. Hursley, my head of security, dismissed it all as urban legends, things made up by these poor souls to entertain themselves, told me not to worry about it. To just do my job, keep the place running smoothly. I didn't listen; I kept looking into matters, and considered calling Paradigm right then and there."
One more dramatic pause!
"Eventually, I went to my office one day, and Hursley was there waiting for me. Tossed me into my seat hard enough I thought for a moment the impact had broken my back. There was a man there with him, taller than either of us, covered head to toe in ink-like shadows, constantly roiling and twisting around like swamp water. He smelled like a zoo, and spoke in a voice that chilled the blood in my veins. Introduced himself as Lars, said he was in charge of an operation under my prison. An operation that was making a lot of money, keeping my prison orderly for me, and cutting down on overcrowding. He told me all I had to do was stay out of his way, make sure Paradigm never learned anything was wrong, obey instructions if I was given them, and occasionally provide Hursley with... recommendations, for prisoners. Who was the most disorderly, or the strongest, or the most likely to obey orders, or sometimes they would want everyone who committed a specific crime. Then, he told me if I ever disobeyed them, or hindered them in any way, I would die - but not before my family had been torn to shreds, and I had heard their last screams."

"You might need more than one. These people are powerful, and I doubt Lars and Hursley are the only ones involved."
It's appreciated, but Schall frowns anyway!
"Once my family is safe here, I can work on finding where my real allies are. We can muster a force to deal with this, or at least to get your agents inside the facility."
"...Was there anything else? I'm afraid I can't give much information on whatever they're actually doing down there; I wasn't kept in the loop, I was just told to make everyone think things were normal. I'm sure Mr. Haynes knows more than I do."
