Rebecca reminds herself ot ask him about that later.
"We have a name of the person who set the home up as a cover up, and we called in for support, but at this point, I'm not sure what the goal is. We know CLAW is involved, but I don't know if we're going in as a rescue, purge, or what." She flexes her fingers, looking down at her hands as she does so.
"Stopping this sort of thing is one of the reasons I wanted to be an agent. I still do. But even though we brought two fo the kids back, I still feel like we should have been able to do a lot more." There'd been an entire living area of young metas, and that wasn't counting the ones in care of the orphanage.
"It's easy to look back and think of all the people you weren't able to save, because it's easy to blame yourself. But it's better, for them and for you, to focus on the ones you did save."
"Hmm." She draws her feet up onto the chair, resting her chin on her knees. "You're probably right. It's just hard, knowing I was in that room, that we were talking with them and wanted to pull them out, but couldn't in the end." Stupid vents. Stupid gas. Stupid suspicious soup.
"One of them was a psychic. She told me that for every person saved, another was lost." She almost doesn't use the word psychic, but for all his chummy ways, Rhett seems to have a smart head on his shoulders.
"Thought of that, too." She nods without changing her position again. "It could be 'the person you would have been' is lost, based on what you chose to do. Or maybe the person you saved is going to be different. It doesn't have to be phsyical loss. We sort of brought that up to her, but it still feels like a lot of guesswork and maybes." Her thoughts focus on what she'd been told about Eric's death for a moment, then she sheaks her head to clear them away.
"I guess I'm nervous. And worried. It's harder to remember that you're doing your best when you've seen their faces. They're not just a random group of people. You recognize them. You have their names."
She appreciates the honesty. More points for Rhett.
"There's no place like home?" It's super cheesy, and Rebecca's tone clearly shows that she knows it, but she can't help it. She blames Eric and his terrible influence.
"I think I can understand that." She'd only referred to this place as such not so long ago, even if there's only a person or two to know she feels that way.
"I guess it helps, too, knowing that there are others who have an idea of what it feels like." Her thoughts wander back to her father, as well as Eric's parents. How one wanted their child to be normal and the others to keep their son from danger.
Rebecca realizes she has to elaborate now and mentally kicks herself. Physically, she just shrugs.
"Well, some people have happy families?" That was still a thing, right? "So in a sense, it's home. Just not the kind they're used to. Not like that. I guess home versus Paradigm home? Different bonds with different people, but also people who are."
"Exactly." Rebecca nods at Rhett echoing her original thought. After mulling ignore a couple of seconds, she decides to go ahead and ask what she has wondering since he came over.
"So are you find old movies, or was there something you wanted?" Not that his company offends her, but it is a little weird to have Mike's roommate randomly plopping down next to her.
Rhett looks over at her, but he doesn't answer right away. Instead, he drums his fingers against his leg for a second, thinking about it.
"Well... I wanted to find a new hobby, to be honest. But I also recognized you, so I figured I'd see what you were up to and see if it gave me some inspiration."
