She almost reached out to touch his arm as he passed, but ended up letting him go.
Looking back at the Director, she offered him the same sort of smile she had Mat, and a single nod. "I figured I'd be back before the new year. I don't have any interest in staying. I just have a few loose ends."
He had already agreed, and she didn't really know why she was still explaining herself. Maybe it was the exhaustion.
He understood. Good. Her smile became a little bit more genuine at that.
Nodding, she said, "I'd like to leave as soon as possible. There's a flight out tomorrow." She had already checked. "I've got my passports and what have you together. Just need to pack."
Giving him a half-assed bow, nothing like what she usually offered, she turned to leave his office. She had a few people to see before she could do what she needed to.
"The man that saved your life? That helped you be an agent? That for all his years of being alive was here for not just you, but everyone on the academy? No one respected him more than you did."
"By those reasons alone, I could list any number of people who did the same thing for me, you included. And I definitely don't want your last name."
Jack stands up, more so that he can look John in the eye rather than being overly aggressive. Yet.
"John, you seem to be having a lot of trouble understanding why this is so hard for me, so let me spell it out for you: he cheated on my mother. This was not just a simple breakup or innocent mistake. He was engaged, and cheated on her with a woman who was in a relationship with your brother at the time. How the fuck are you not upset? I'm really getting the impression you don't give a shit about me or your own family, John, and that's why I have this 'ridiculous' problem with you."
"It was over fifteen god damn years ago, Jack! He slept with someone else once under circumstances neither you nor I know anything about. He's been dead for FIFTEEN years. He's your father!"
His voice raises as he speaks.
"You're acting like a little bitch about all of this this. You're upset that I'm not tearing down walls at the news? Aaliyah hurt my brother and I dealt with it at the time, but I didn't remove all trace of her from my life because that's insane!"

"He's MY father! They're MY parents! Don't you fucking talk to me about how I should be reacting to issues with my family. You're barely, peripherally involved, you have no fucking right to tell me how to deal with personal things."
Jack points at John aggressively!
"But yes, it happened fifteen years ago. An event fifteen years ago that I learned about just now. Of course I'm sore about it. From what Aaliyah told me, she's loved him for a long time, and she doesn't regret it in the slightest. She doesn't regret breaking up an engagement at all. An engagement, that as I remember, she was so excited and happy to see happen in the first place."
He snorts, though he does wonder whether she'd told John the same thing.
"It's like... the man I respected most wasn't nearly the man I thought he was. He was my idol, but it was because he would never do something like this."

"Then act like he's your father, Jack! You owe him so much more than the way you're acting."
He glares Jack down!
"And, that's just it. You're thinking that he's not the man you knew, but for all accounts besides once hiccup he is. He was a respectable man! And how AALIYAH feels doesn't have anything to do with it. You can be mad at Aaliyah, but Dain deserves more from you."
"Downplaying? You're overplaying it! I've never seen you have such a vendetta against someone. Hell, we hired a guy to train our agents who has killed people and released countless criminals from the vault. We've seen worse, Jack! I know him cheating hurt you, and that you're resentful because of it, but you're going too far with this."
