Bahram is in the library, reading up on the occult. He received a commission to do covers for an occult-themed comic series, and he figures it won't hurt to do some research.
Rebecca is quiet happy to find the library is a relatively normal, quiet library. She uses the heel of her shoe to ensure the door closes behind her without a lot of fuss and takes a moment to look around. Eventually, she starts looking at the decimal system labels at the ends of the shelves, heading towards where she believes the occult books will be.
A goth kid iinterested in the occult. Surprise.
Any particular titles or subjects he has out as she passes by?
He's got The Book of Thoth open in front of himself, and The Book of Lies and The Book of the Law by Crowley, stacked upon the Satanic Bible and The Mystical Caballah.
He seems moderately interested, and he's trying to take notes on things.
It's good to see that the academy has the familiar titles of classics; there's hope they have a decent selection here. Then again, they probably would, after Chicago got a taste of demon so many years ago.
Of course, it also means he has one of the titles she's looking for.
"Finished with that one?" She stops near the table and points to The Book of Lies, though she keeps her hands close to her own body.
He's slow to respond as he finishes a thought on paper, then laughs lightly.
"It's for a job. I'm to make covers for an occult comic series and I figured I'd get more well-versed in what I'm to depict. That and I now find this all... intriguing." Another smile. "I can assume you've an interest in this as well. Perhaps you could assist me sometime."
"Guilty." Her smile quirked, amused at the fact that this person is treating her like something other than a freak for her interests. Mostly, people mocked unless they were also interested, though some here were pretty accepting. It seemed he fit both of the good categories for now.
"That actually sounds cool." She takes a seat across from him, but keeps to her own space. "Did you have anything specific you needed, or do you get to do pretty much whatever you like for them?" She means the occult material, though she forgot to specify.
His grin widens as she takes the seat. He doesn't question her desire for personal space, instead focusing on what it seems she is comfortable with.
"All I've been requested to follow is to use characters involved in the issue, enacting a scene from it itself. Background details and the like were left to me, and I would like my work to be authentic and educated on the matter it depicts, rather than simply appear that way." The possibly long-winded explanation makes him chuckle, but he taps the book he's reading at the moment. "I've grasped the theory of the tarot, itself, and currently I'm working on... The Atu. I'm not sure I've said that correctly."
She looks from Bahram to the books and nods at his explanation.
"ah-tu," she responds, "It's a long U at the end, with emphasis." She skims over the books with a thoughtful expression.
"Well, the Thoth is different from other tarot and mystical meanings, but you've probably got that by now." Her lips twist as she mulls over her options and looks back at him. "Did they give you any key words to describe the story or characters? Without huge spoilers? You could tie plenty of stuff in that way if it's significant." Which, admittedly, may be what he intended, but she was on a roll and gathering steam.
"Ah-tu. Ahh-too." He practices saying it for a moment.
"Nothing that's not already easy to assume. The two main characters are both young, ostracized witches. The author states "anything from Crowley or popular occult culture" will be relevant. Doesn't exactly give me a clue of where to... start."
A frown.
"Tarot was mentioned to play a large role, I know this. Though aside from that, these people were vague enough that my intent is to simply educate myself and throw almost all of it together to make something coherent and pleasing to the eye."
Suddenly, he stops and laughs at himself.
"Apologies if I've rambled. I was not intending to talk your ear off."
Rebecca listens intently, raising her brows at the vague and very unhelpful description that was giving, silently mouthing parts of it as she tried to wrap her head around how horribly wrong this project could have been without her expertise to come save day!
"Well that's...sorta good?" She frowns. "Popular culture stuff can cover the Thoth and these others, but sometimes it's just ignorant or like trying to work with a giant marshmallow." Super fluffy and sugary, and not in the Enya way. She drums her fingers against her thigh with one hand.
"Thoth tarot and Rider-Wait tarot are two different styles, so that could have been a disaster. You should be okay with this, though. Maybe you can tie in any cultures they come from, or the symbology in particular cards.
"But you definitely grabbed some of the better books to start!" She waves away his apology with a hand, though it stays well within her personal bubble.
"No no, don't be sorry! I would like to help. Plus, there's a lot to work through at first, especially when that told was that general." She mulls over the book and ideas alike.
"Have you thought about a tree in the background? There's a lot of references scattered in some of of these about the Tree of Life."
"A tree?" He blinks. It was certainly one of the first things Bahram had considered, but with the woman's enthusiasm he feigns initial ignorance. "That would be quite a solid foundation, wouldn't it?"
A laugh escapes Bahram's lips as he jots that down, a grin on his face. "Hm. Can you tell me some of the key concepts of Thoth tarot? Or, rather, explain to me the difference between it and Rider-Wait?"
