"Nothing else? Because I wasn't told anything about this."
Jack'd told him to sort himself out and get things worked out, but he'd done that. Mostly. Well, he'd tried, there's not been much chance with some.
"What can I do? People are dying out there, I'm not going to hide in this Academy while it happens. Not when people I care about are going out and risking themselves."
That same determination that just made Aaron try to fight Mr. Amtrum instead of getting out of Tutorial when he had a chance flashes across his eyes!
"All due respect, sir, no way in hell am I sitting it out. People need me. I'm sorry I was useless against you, but I can't sit around and do nothing as people suffer out there."
He can't help remembering the little kid in Belarus.
Which was why a lot of Aaron's moves were based around not fighting fair. But he falls silent for a moment, considering.
"I thought I was supposed to try to beat you, because that's what happened in our past sessions. I thought if I ran away I'd just let you down."
And really, what if he just ran away in the real world? What if Mr. Amtrum were an evil metahuman and Aaron, instead of trying to stop him, ran? Left the people being terrorised to their fates?
"Well, do you think you can beat me now? If I decided that we are enemies and I needed to kill you to achieve what I want. Do you think you would beat me like that? Would you stand there and let me cut you down out of pride? Would you throw away the lives of your team for the same reason? Because you don't want to lose. Because of your ego?"
He could think of three ways to bring Mr. Amtrum down right now, before he could do anything, if he had to list them.
...The downside is all three are lethal. And he wasn't a killer, was he?
But wouldn't he have to be? He stands there, absorbing Mat's words, thinking.
"Not my team, no. But I came here to put others above myself, to protect the innocent. I'd try to stop you. It's not about ego, it's about not letting people get hurt on my watch."
Is it about ego? What was "I want to be the strongest here" or "I wanted to be Superman when I grew up" but ego? Wasn't ego - or perceived ego - why he dislikes Eric so much? Aside from the whole cheating thing
"I couldn't stand there and let you hurt people I care about. But you're saying I need to pick my battles more carefully, aren't you?"
"Not knowing when you are outmatched is ego. This isn't a movie, the plucky young protagonist doesn't rise above all odds. He gets eviscerated and hung by his entrails."
