"What?!" Her voices spikes up an octave in pitch and volume.
"Eric, I was alone. You know what was in that open graves? Imagine dealing with dead bodies that made that look like a beauty queen." Her stomach roiled just thinking about it, her face tinging green.
"I thought we just got separated in the chaos, and you went after the big guy. I was alone."
"You tried to grab my face before turning to attack the girl that was there. She had to hit you over the head with a freaking shovel before you'd stop!"
She stares some more before shaking her head fervently.
"Eric, you're my friend. There's no way I'd do that." Her frown deepens as she tried to recall what happened. "I don't know where you guys went, but the only other living person there was some guy in a trench coat. I couldn't just leave him there."
She stares at him, running through events as she knew them in her head. The last things she remembered before coming to were the guy with the fingers telling her she had a black soul, then the trench coat guy and fighting the living dead...
...Including one that had clubbed her with a shovel.
The color drains from her face so fast that it turns grey, stumbling back like he'd just hit her. Still staring at him, but now with a look of pure horror.
“Have you made any friends at the academy yet?”
“A couple. Why?”
“I'm just curious as to which one you'll kill first.”
“No.” It's barely a whisper, thought it feels like she's shouting, as though her lungs have been left in a forge, breath coming in short, ragged bursts. Her arms fold across her chest, hands gripping the fabric of her sleeves so tightly that it makes their shaking worse.
He stood there, unsure of what to do with the revelation. What was he supposed to do. He couldn't even fathom on how to comfort her right now, or even if he should. She tried to kill him, did he even owe it to her?
"Everything is so fucked up now..."
He sighed. Everything. He hated this. He hated not knowing how he was supposed to feel. Feeling so powerless, so helpless, just tossed around like a rowboat on the ocean. He felt like he was drowning, and barely able to keep his head above water, and now he was dragging her down with him.
A storm is always able to take down more than one ship.
Her gaze remains in the ground, darting left and right as she tries to remember, but nothing of what Eric says comes to mind. She didn't say aloud that she meant to kill him - he knew. Because the things she saw had already been dead and needed to stay that way.
"Yeah." Her voice cracks on the word and she wets her lips. "Yeah, it is." She looks up at him again and shakes her head, voice wavering.
"Eric, I never...I never would have done that if I knew it was you."
He didn't believe her. He thought she was making this up. That she honestly meant to kill him.
"You know that, right?" She hated herself so much in that moment. For what she'd nearly done and what it would lead to. Hated that she couldn't look away and he wouldn't look at her.
He hesitated, maybe longer than he should have. It was still fresh in his mind. The way she lunged for his face with her hand. Knowing what that could do to him. But she was always so careful to not touch people. He felt like over the last month he had gotten to know her. He didn't know what happened in that Graveyard. But she wasn't right. That wasn't the Rebecca he knew.
He sighed. But he nodded.
"I know. But I don't know what happened there. If it was something he did. Or something with your power in general. But I believe you."
He looked up at her. His eyes still puffy and red.
"I trust you. And I'm not gonna abandon you. Okay?"
Even if he wanted to just quit and curl up into a dark hole.
Every second of silence felt like another nail in the coffin, quickly reaching the point where she couldn't take it anymore. The silence was worse than his outbursts or anger. How could he think she would?
"Since when has that stopped you?"
His answer cuts through the harsh reminder, pulling Rebecca away from her own thoughts before she could sink further. Her shoulders tense as she listens with a small nod. She really hopes it's just something the hulking grave digging guy did to her, rather than another manifestation of her power. She didn't know what she'd do then...
"'Kay." She offers him a weak smile, still sick to her stomach. She can't decide if she's relieved at his answer or disgusted by the fact that someone would forgive her for something like this. She rubs her hands over her face with a sigh, squeezing the hair near her temples with a firm pressure to chase the thoughts away.
"Thanks, Eric." She means it, but she wishes she could feel more confident about what she might do that would cause most to abandon her. With a deep breath, she forces her hands to her sides.
"You too, you know? It's not that great, I know, but you've got a lot of crap going on, too. But I gotta go. I just wanted to be sure you were okay before I go see Dr. Gavyns." Because now Rebecca gets to figure out what the heck is wrong with herself before she starts believing she's crazy, too.
