Valo is in the courtyard with a large bag of various parts on the ground beside him. He's digging through the bag and piecing things together, building the frame for what looks like some sort of high-tech slingshot. Only, it fires water pellets.
He's entirely lost in his building, since it's the only thing that makes him feel normal anymore. And he can do it without his power. The irony is that he's building it to complement his power.

He scrambles one of the finished models and places it on his wrist to show her.
"It's like a slingshot sort of thing. I pour water into it, freeze it into ice pellets, and uh... fire. Not entirely conventional, I suppose. More like a hobby."
Valo laughs nervously, slightly taken aback by the enthusiasm. He completely doubts it's genuine, and almost feels as though he's being ridiculed.
"My power has very little use in many situations, and I figure it's a nice way to defend myself without having to put anyone down."
Taking a bottle of water, he pours it into a compartment at the top of the contraption. His body cools and, after a moment, he pushes down on a button. A sludge rockets forward in a mess, and he laughs in embarrassment about it.
Valo figures it's best not to elaborate. So he just scrambles to get his stuff together and hoists the bag up over his shoulder. Once he's all set, he'll just motion for her to lead the way.
"Hopefully more than just how to deal with an impaled hand. Don't get me wrong, that's probably a very useful technique I'll need as long as I'm here, but the thought is a little upsetting."
"That'd be appreciated. Hopefully I'll never need it, though."
Her question is followed by a small silence before he says anything at all.
"I, uh, had an accident. Out at MIT. Or, a series of accidents. So now I'm here to learn how to keep that from happening again." Touchy subject, but he'll live. "What about you? Not sure how long you've been here but I'm pegging you for a veteran."
"Yes. Hopefully you wouldn't. I'd suggest you to join the Intel department."
She figures what happened by his comment and chooses not to press.
"Wow. You are a genius." She exclaims with wide eyes again!
"Surprisingly, I'm not. I dropped out in my third year after I got my new power to pursue my medical degree. I wanted to be more helpful and I didn't feel too useful on missions with pain inducement. Not exactly me! My husband didn't approve of me going on them either, so I left! Here I am though! Back again in a more suitable position"
Charlie's consistent bubbly attitude is making him doubt her sincerity less and less, so she gets a smile out of him.
"Wait, new power? So you weren't always a walking oxymoron?" He said that in as nice of a way as he could possibly say it. "How long did it take you to get used to this pain inducement?"
"There was something called LIFE that took my healing powers so I was a non meta. But I went to look for my powers again since they were manifested as either an item or something in human form. Ended up with Brian."
Oh yah she totally named her power.
"It took me a couple of days to a week before k wasn't zapping everyone and making them feel pain. It took me Another couple of years before I really had me control over what kind of pain people felt. To be honest I didn't train much with it. It's just for self defense now.
A stubbed toe is pain enough to stop most thieves." She teases.
"It took powers, huh? Shame it didn't hit my parents."
Maybe then he wouldn't have been born like this.
"A couple of years. That sounds... discouraging," he laughs, having no desire to remain here for so long. "Remind me not to get on your bad side. I like my toes stub-free."
As they enter the main building, he just continues to follow at Charlie's side.
"Can I ask what your time here was like? I still have no idea what to expect besides imminent impalement."
Charlie does change the topic quickly after her comment though.
"My time here was definitely memorable. I made a lot of lifelong friends since teamwork is key here. Paradigm challenged me and made me treasure my life more.
Valo frowns. He doesn't think his father is great at anything besides being a massive douchebag.
"See, "treasure my life" isn't the first impression I get considering Vlad the Impaler is one of the first dudes we all get to see. So, I don't think you're lying or anything, I'm just... skeptical. Not about whether I'd be capable, or anything like that, just if it'd really be worth it."
"I'm sorry for what may have happened. But he really loves you a lot. I've seen it myself." She offers before entering.
"Please have a seat. I'll show you some basics first."
Charlie takes a first aid kit out.
"To be honest, it's not for everyone. It's dangerous on missions but the trainers here will prepare you; even if I don't agree with their methods. They'll develop your powers. Give you control and maybe new techniques.
If you don't want to go on missions I'm sure you can do more research related things or craft more of your gadgets."
He doesn't touch that remark. He's got scars that say otherwise, but they're only there for him to know. So, he sits obediently, nodding as she speaks. His bag is dropped to his side, and the slingshot is placed on top of it.
"Maybe I'll start seeing that control sometime soon then. I don't think the old man would be very proud of me if I sidelined myself." He nods, looking down at the kit and waiting.
"This all sounds like something I probably should have learned before!" He rubs his temples as he thought about it, just making sure he remembers everything.
"Pretty sure I got it. So, my turn, then?" He gestures toward the slingshot.
He picks up the slingshot and sets it on his lap, and pulls out a bunch of the components necessary from his bag! He then begins to explain the process of how he built it using inexpensive household materials, since his RPer isn't entirely educated on this subject either!
"You might want to use something besides water, though, unless you've got someone in your family who can freeze it without using appliances. It'd be as easy as substituting the deeper tray for a more shallow one. Then you just pull the string, and bam."
