Rebecca's gaze slides over the first page of her notes once again, her now frequent frown tugging at the corners of her mouth as she goes over the names. Several of them have dots of different colors after their names, though some don't resemble a person's name all that much. Her enthusiasm for organized note taking had waned as she realized she was just biding her time until she could do something useful.
At least, until she realized where she remembered Director Harris's name on her list. The same name as the Miami director, head of the obnoxious brat club. Happily, most of them had been beaten in the tournament. But hey, at least she wasn't getting kicked out.
Had that really been a threat by the Director? It seemed so silly now, but whatever. Her current mission as she crossed the courtyard was to find the Miami director and ask him some questions.
Steve was sitting near the fountain, his old haunt from when he was a student at the Academy. A smile almost plastered on his face as he twirled his finger through the air causing the water from the fountain to float up and shift and twirl through the air in a dance.
The dancing water catches her attention first, her gaze following it towards the Director sitting at the foot of the fountain like some sort of providence. Or cosmic humor.
So this was one of his powers, the second one. She watches with a great deal of interest, not saying anything right away.
His movements are slight and the way the water moves is completely fluid. Almost natural, as if all water moved that way. It was clear he had a lot of experience in the use of his power by how effortless everything seemed to be.
She watches for another moment or so, impressed, but standing in the shadows waiting isn't going to get anything accomplished. Nothing except make her look like a creeper.
"Director Harris?" She takes another step forward, folding the papers in half again as she nears the fountain.
"Rebecca." She watches the water fall back into the fountain. "Rebecca Jefferson." Her attention turns back to Steve as she studies him. He isn't what she expected from first seeing him. His bantering with Direct Gavyns had given her a different impression, and he was certainly well mannered compared to the Miami agents he'd brought with him.
It's not what she expected. She blinks for a second before continuing. "Maybe. Do you mind if I ask you something?" Besides what she just did.
"Paradigm draws people from all walks of life. Sometimes it can be difficult for people to leave their old perceptions behind them. But I assure you, all of my students have good hearts and genuinely wish to help people."
Rebecca stares at Steve, trying to imagine Director Gavyns making such a claim and failing. there was no way all the students were that perfect. She lets that doubt settle over them for a moment before continuing.
"If you say so." She slides the papers into her pocket, a more serious expression on her face in light of the backwards chastisement.
"Honestly, I wanted to ask you about your power, if you don't mind."
She inhaled deeply, staring at him - them - for a moment in wonder as her stomach twisted. It was amazing, but also frightening, considering what she'd heard of herself and the power she had. Her questions were, for the moment, forgotten.
"How?" She blinks and leans forward, elbows on her thighs. "How is that possible?"
"My understanding is limited. But when I was a little older than you I spoke to my original power after I tracked it down for the second time. He didn't even realize he wasn't human until I found him the first time. But he used to be a part of me. Which is probably why I was able to find him in the first place. I knew where to look."
He was about to go into a tangent before he stopped himself.
"But that's besides the point and not what you are asking about. He was about to agree to bond with me so we could reverse a terrible tragedy that happened in Colorado. That's when I explained my plan to use my water power in conjunction with him to reverse the damage that was done. I was asking him. Both of them to sacrifice their lives with me to undo it, the response wasn't what I expected. I was chastised. Not for wishing to sacrifice ourselves, but to do it in vain because I had already acquired a power.
The way he had explained it is like this.
Imagine your body is a cup. You Miss Jefferson are a cup. And there is so much you can hold within you. Since I had a power my cup was full. Adding him in would essentially fill it with two liquids, but I'd lose some of both. I can't fill a cup with two cups worth of water. Furthermore I'd be unable to use both powers together effectively enough to do what I set out to do. Because I would not have a teacher."
He sighed. It was so long ago.
"You see, when a power merges with a human being willingly the merge is complete and total. It fades into your own soul and you become one being. But when you take the life of a power, like any sentient being it causes a rift. The merge can never be perfect. It's soul will always remain distinct. Generally it's ability to act out or make itself known is limited in scope. But it is there. So that is how. I had an imperfect melding with the power that once represented my mastery over water."
He'd fall into silent contemplation.

Silent contemplation is silent. Rebecca rests her chin on one hand, her gaze on Steve but not seeing him as she recalled various things that had been told to her the past week. Some she had believed; others, not so much.
This was not how she imagined the conversation would go.
"So you...talk to it?" She hesitates, but doesn't sound suspicious or mocking. The curiosity is right there with her own personal drive. "Can you understand each other?"
