"You'll get it." Why is she encouraging him? That's stealing from the academy, Rebecca. Bad. Not to mention he's going to scoff at her and act like she's dumb for suggesting otherwise. She clears her throat and looks back at him with a small frown at his question.
"You don't think it would be hard to miss if I did?" She shakes her head before he can point out it's not a real answer. "No.
"Not so much as others who throw it in people's faces." She shrugs. "It could be anything, really. Maybe you want to learn to control or improve your abilities. Maybe you just wanted an escape, and this was the easiest place." Her lips twitch, forcing her voice back from the drop in volume it had taken.
"Or maybe you just want to save the world when people are looking the other way so they can ooh and ahh over you when you're in the limelight. Maybe you just want to do it because you're a decent person, who knows?"
He's amused throughout its entirety, but chuckles as the improving abilities part.
"Nothing so grandeur. It's the best way to challenge myself. Life before was tedious and this is the best way I've found so far to keep me from becoming stagnant. Did you know your-" he pauses, gauging Rebecca's expression before asking his question.
"What is your favorite kind of music?" Totally the question he was going to ask.
She looks at him with a small frown when he switches questions, clearly not what he intended to ask. she couldn't think of why he wouldn't go through with his first question, whatever it was.
"Rock and classical, though the latter is newish." She looks up at him. "What about yours? Do your tastes lie in what you hacked into my media player?"
She nods at his response but otherwise doesn't say anything. When the silence continues, she shifts, and Shelob does as well. Rebecca's gaze drifts down to the floor as she crosses her arms over her chest and tucks her legs back up on the chair, letting her boots stay away from the upholstery.
"It's not a relationship. I haven't spoken to him since I came here, an we didn't really have much of one before that. It'll probably stay that way." She still doesn't open her eyes.
She opens her eyes at the pause, watching his expression for signs of what she's already suspecting. Taking a deep breath, she tries to will her stomach to unclench, but like her power, it has no intention of listening.
"A few morons forced under my watch are on a mission this weekend. There's been hits at a few anti-meta rallies around the nation lately."
He types as he talks, using his fingers to flick the screen to face her so she could see the image. It's an E-vite RSVP list, one of the ten names snowing out of the thousand saying "Adrian Jefferson."
She unfolds herself and leans forward to look at the screen when he flicks her way, stomach knotting even tighter. Sure enough, her father's name is on the list. She takes a deep breath and rubs her face over her hand, managing to look even more tired than she had already.
"Of course he's on the list." She almost mumbles the words to herself, dragging her hand away to look at Silas fully.
"So you assume my reaction was out of personal bonds, rather than familial loyalty. Or that you might have been closer to the truth than I wanted you to know?" She shifts again, much to Shelob's displeasure. The spider pauses, then starts to climb up the back of the chair.
"People start asking questions and suspecting things when they find out your father's on the opposite side."
"Oh?" Her smile fades at his question. She sighs and shakes her head.
"For what it's worth, you keep me on my toes. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it has more to do with what I want than who is in the room with me."
