"And can you explain to me how your power works when talking to objects? Is it a straight exchange of information. Do you hear audiable sounds from the object or is it more telepathic? "
"For most things, I can hear them telepathically. That is, when they want to be heard. If I had to describe it, I hear the thoughts that are broadcasted, not private. That's why I usually call out verbally to let them know I can talk to them. My end isn't private is all."
"Oh, they do have personalities! Some are more straightforward than others, especially objects, but it's a real treat being able to talk to something like my helix fossil and learn about all sorts of things on their mind."
"Many objects care a great deal about their intended purpose, I've found. When they're broken or finished or used up, they don't seem as functional or are at least depressed. I'm not sure if they truly die, though my rifle friend was terribly afraid of being taken apart."
She counts off a finger.
"Plants and animals are a lot like humans, if a bit more moment to moment. Plants are generally patient, animals know and show what they want, and on certain occasions, they're as complex as humans."
She brings out her helix fossil, an ammonite embedded into a rock.
"Helix is very old and very wise. He's heard many things during his travels, however he does that, and has a reverent nature. I heard him call out to me when we first met. Sometimes he speaks with the voice of thousands, but I believe that's when he's showing off his sense of humor."
A fossil with a knack for funny voices or pretending to be a deity. We'll never know.
"I think so. He's very mysterious. He won't tell me where he came from except from long ago. Now that I think about it, he may be a ghost seeking refuge in this current form... Since fossils in their nature are preserved remains. Even though he doesn't feel like the last ghost I met."
"Back home, I felt a cold presence for a while before trying to talk to him. I had to focus before I was able to see him too. Didier. He was erased from the family tree, and my parents finally believed I had an ability when I brought him up. He seemed alright. He comes and goes. He didn't like the place too much, and didn't understand why he occasionally showed up there, but we think it's because where he grew up."
"Unless Helix is a ghost, yes. I suppose it's unfair to assume that all ghosts will appear the same way, but Didier seems to be a conventional ghost to me."
Fred dreads the day she sees more gruesome ghosts...
Fredegund sits quietly, understanding the gravity her ability's capability to talk to the dead. In a way, much like language in and of itself, speaking to the dead opened up new worlds... But perhaps a world best left unknown by certain measure. Didier never told her the circumstances of his death. Just that he felt confused about a girl being able to see him. A world in motion like a dream, until that dream decided to root itself in a new reality, cementing that the next world was no more a dream than the one he kept having about his old home, now occupied by the likes of Fredegund.
"Aside from testing my ability's capabilities, I need to learn what it takes to do interrogations. My first few interrogations with objects from the Chthonic Empire... Just hurt my heart so much. I know there has to be better ways to extract information without resorting to harm. Humane ways."
"I imagine that's one of the better ways to extract information, but the rifle, for instance, kept wanting to shoot Silas, and I'm not sure if I can honor every term that comes my way."
"The most information we got was the Chthonic Empire looking for excuses to end the treaty and a basic idea as to how it shoots pain instead of bullets. It's only gun and it only knows so much."
