Fredegund sits at a table with various books in different languages. She puts down the book she's reading, rubbing at her strained eyes. It was a doozy. Languages using Latin alphabets? All she has to do is sound it out in her head and read it. It just takes time, since not all languages "read" or sounded the same. Languages that don't use a Latin alphabet, like ideograms and so on? She rarely got to practice reading those much. And so, here we are.
The book she was reading was in Korean, selected since the written language's alphabet featured symbols that represented mouth shapes for the consonants. They also looked alien enough for her to try understanding it without necessarily learning it; She understood other languages when they were spoken to her, so why not written languages? She made some progress, but like any academic endeavor, making the mental connections stick was the hard part.
She sighs heavily and looks around. She's been here for... How long? Maybe she needed a break. Something else to occupy her mind.
About the time she was ready for a break a stone fist would press down upon the table next to her. Mathew would loom over her his gaze staring at the book she was looking at. He remained silent however.
Fred flinches, not expecting Mathew to be here. She feels bad for wanting to take a break now, especially since she didn't want to let him down. And yet, she's so tired... She follows his gaze to her book in Korean. The section she's reading is about traveling to other parts of the world that would have cultures that differ from South Korea's. At least... She thinks so.
She looks back up with a nod. It'd be impolite to not acknowledge him.
"Some. It would be a lie to say it's easy. If I'm not mistaken, I think there are few bathtubs in Korea. Travelers ought to expect showers to not be attached to sinks. Korean travelers, I mean."
She runs her fingers through her hair as she looks at the portion she's still trying to understand. Fred resists looking at her notes about what sounds the symbols make.
Fred keeps staring at the symbols. Some of the words were familiar enough if she read this far... Slowly, the concepts drew together and... Crashed into a jumbled mess of things she swore she already read. She looks up to Mathew again.
She rubs her eyes again and blinks hard. She looks at the symbols again, piecing them together. Oh how she wanted to look at her notes. But she must have internalized them if understanding was so close just moments ago. Context clues offered hints. The words looked familiar. Felt familiar. They weren't just shapes and lines... They were symbols imbued with meaning and intent... After poring over the words so intently for the past several hours, her want to help Mathew made her skim instead, causing something to go off in her mind. It was like a match being sparked to life. What was that?
Fred tilts her head to the side, then back into position. She understood the next section now. This time, without the help of her notes, or sounding things out as much. Something about snacks being way saltier and flavorful in the US and the suggestion to bring your own snacks in case you prefer something more lighter on the palate. Going back to the beginning and reading up to the current section, she understood it. Her eyes lit up. Victory.
"I'm just checking in on you. Your power doesn't lend itself to my normal methods, but I am curious and interested in your progress."
He'd look down to her notes. He admired the way she seemed to dive into her lessons. How seriously she seemed to take this. And while her skill had no combat utility, it would surely prove to be valuable in the future. It was well worth nurturing.
"Oh, thank you. Studying languages to bolster my ability has been quite an experience. With each connection I make, more questions arise. How come I can understand this, but not that? Are there truly limits to my ability to communicate? Why do I sound like I'm speaking English to the casual observer, but not to the active participant when speaking in another language? What will happen if I spoke over a loudspeaker? I learned so much on my own, but here at Paradigm... I'm allowed, no, encouraged to find out."
"I mean... How would I even test this? 'If anyone can hear this in any language other than English, give us a call'? What if I'm testing this incorrectly, producing faulty results?"
If there's one thing being privately tutored didn't prepare her for, it's messing up in front of peers.
Fred finishes packing up her bag and putting away the books.
"My family is French, but I was born and raised here in America. I think after a long while, it's hard to remember which language I learned first. I think in English."
"What about the other part of your abilities? I'm to understand that you can speak to objects and animals as well? How has your progress gone with that?"
"Oh! Well I had an idea while I was with Silas..."
Whose name she learned sometime after their initial meeting. His personality wasn't hard to identify.
"There was a rifle I sort of bonded with and thought maybe my power could somehow improve its condition, like that one experiment where plants were exposed to different stimuli like talking and music. If plants could grow better when exposed to music, who knows what could happen if I tried talking to more things."
