The sparring matches were over, but Director Harris and his students had yet to leave. Still, with the fighting done at least the tension in the air seemed to be gone. Mostly.
Aaron wasn't watching them all from the shadows any more, there was no need, but he was looking for one in particular. The big one, Mr. Hollywood, the only one that didn't lose. He was confident in his chances of winning if they came to blows, but that wasn't the point of the search. No, more important than that.
A real man isn't afraid to admit when he's screwed up, and Aaron screwed up big the other day. It was time to try to right that, at least a little.
"No, just to do the right thing, and to make sure you're blaming the right people - that phone thing was all me. The rest of the branch are cool."
Aaron shrugged. "I was wrong, and I'm sorry. For judging you, and going behind your back instead of talking to you man to man. You deserve a lot better."
Even if you are an arrogant shithead.
"I'd like to make amends sometime, but if now's not that time, that's fine. Whether you forgive anyone is your call; I don't have the right to make that decision for you. Nobody does."
Well Aaron was glad for that, and once the shake is done he drops the little arm shield. Mat had made him a little paranoid about that kind of thing. Just a tiny bit.
"I actually wouldn't've minded facing you." Not a lie. "It wasn't to try to take you out of things; I was looking out for my friends here. But I should've known better than to think Director Harris would bring anyone who would try anything shady."
"Maybe I will. I'm sure the branches all see a lot of each other."
What Adam didn't know was how close Aaron had been to specifically asking the Directors to match them up. "For now though, I'm glad we're both good guys."
Didn't mean he didn't kind of want to kick this guy's ass sometime, but at least they didn't have to be actual enemies.
"It ain't just for now unless you go rogue. Then maybe you really will get to see what it's like on the other side of an ass kicking from me. Except unlike with your friends. I won't be handicapped."
Aaron was still 80% sure he wouldn't need a handicap against this guy. He didn't lose the smile though, just giving Adam a shrug. Making it clear the tough talk was doing absolutely nothing.
"Don't think you understood me, man. Nobody's going rogue - all I'm saying is that, all else aside, I'm glad we're on the same team."
They were both very confident young men, about their own chances in that hypothetical showdown! The silence stretched between them, looking at each other, until it almost became awkward. Partly, that was down to Aaron not being sure what to say, nor finding all the unspoken posturing all that interesting, even as he found himself getting caught up in it.
"The rest of your team going to be okay? Sounded like some of them got pretty roughed up."
He might have been looking for a change of subject, but he also cared. They were all agents, at the end of the day.
