It was early evening but the sun was already down. The lights around campus flickering to life as Mathew leaned against the North facing wall shivering slightly under the cool breeze. He'd reach into his pocket, pulling out a beat up package of cigarettes. He'd shake the package, one smoke coming out of the hole in the top of the box. A flick, huff, and sigh later and he could already feel the tension of the day melting away.
"Oh, I believe it. Just seems like its been happening more."
She said it like she had been paying attention to when he was in the office, or the Tutorial. She had heard about some fights, had even seen a few herself, but she wasn't stalking him.
Well. The file couldn't be considered stalking, right?
He didn't say anything and just looked toward the night sky. No stars however, between the lights of Chicago and the clouds there was no chance of that.
Walking from the opposite direction of Mathew and Piper is a familiar figure to both, a dark-clad teen with her hands in her pockets as she walks alone in the evening. The silence of the infirmary was maddening, mostly because it wasn't silence, just a high-pitched buzz of machines and the beeps of a heart monitor. She needed a moment to just breathe.
She let the moment of silence fall upon them, but sat down where she was, obviously not intending to leave. She even opened her composition book, going over her notes.
"So what did you save us from, Mathew Amtrum?" She finally asked, without looking up.
Rebecca slows but doesn't stop, nodding to both Piper and Mathew in greeting. There's a flicker of surprise and irritation on her face when she hears Piper's question to Mathew. Way to be subtle about things, Piper.
Subtly isn't exactly her strong suit. She looks up at Rebecca and nods back in greeting, despite the look that crossed her face. She slipped the pen from her ear and wiggled it slightly before starting to write a few more notes down.
The bristle was so unexpected, shock showing across her features. She blinked and looked at Rebecca for a moment, a long moment, and then shook her head, returning to her notes.
"How are the two?" She asked her friend, though she hadn't come to visit Silas nor Mike.
"They're okay," she says after a moment, her voice soft. She's standing closer to neither but making a triangle between the three of them. Sighing she removes and hand from her pocket to massage the back of her neck.
"Mike's awake for now, at least." Hand back in pocket, she offers a small smile. She knows Piper's not fond of either of them, but then her gaze slides back to Mathew, who apparently is very popular. She also seems to be frequent in interrupting this popularity, and raises her brows at him.
Piper shook her head, not thinking there was anything to interrupt, either. She scribbled something down in the journal she had brought, not bothering to ask any more questions about Silas or Mike.
"He's just smoking. Enjoying himself. Figured I'd sit back and get some notes done."
Just another blink. Mathew's not pushing her buttons, and she's not interested in pushing his. The information she had gone after was for herself, not to antagonize him with. Her focus returns to Piper as she nods.
"Good luck with that, then." It's for both of them, though she doesn't say as much. She doesn't need to ask what the notes are for with Mathew right there. She just wasn't sure why the other girl wanted them, unless it was something along the lines of what Daniel had in mind.
Mathew was going to keep being popular for a while, she figured.
"Good night." Again, it could be for both of them or even neither. Her mind on things other than Piper's note taking and the struggle to have a moment of peace alone that she shared with the trainer, Rebecca moves on, letting them be as the conversation she had in the infirmary plays over in her head again.
