"Well yeah, I mean, most people don't like thinking about death in general." She can accept that. "It's a pretty gruesome part of history, too, and that's before metas came into existence. Most people don't like being reminded that they are monsters, or can be." A wry smile touches her face. "Guess that's our job."
Piper shrugged, suddenly reminded of the meta human rally and all the slurs used against them. "Monsters, freaks, you know... Racism exists in all forms, even still. People can't hate any other subculture anymore, so I guess it's our turn."
"I know." Hello bitterness, my old friend. "And sure they can, just give them time." She shrugs as well. "Prove them wrong, fight, or give in; in the end, they still hold their judgements. They'll twist what we do or say around to fit their needs, just like they always do."
"Aaron saved this man's life... literally. And he turned around and insulted him." She shook her head in disgust. "He tried to turn the entire crowd against us."
She frowns, then nods. "You were one of the ones at the anti-meta rally then." She rubs the back of her neck, looking down at the spot where the book used to be.
"Honestly, if that's the worst that came from his helping, it sounds like he got off easy."
"Yeah..." She gets the sentiment, even if she wasn't there for the event itself. "I dunno, they get scared. It's not right, definitely not when they act out, but that's all I've been able to make of it. Our powers aren't any more to fear than, say, a person with a gun or a bomb in a school - an actual bomb," she adds as she recalls the bomber lady from before.
"It's the same as it's always been in history. We're the outsiders. We're different. We're another reason Mundies can say that those people are just lone wolfs and flukes of nature." She really needs to get off this topic; it's starting to get depressing.
"Some people, we can convince otherwise. Some, we can't. No matter how hard we try. Doesn't mean it's easy to tell them apart. Things like getting yelled at or shot are part of the package." By the severity of her frown, one can tell she does not approve.
"At least he made it out okay. But that shouldn't feel like a compensation prize."
A touch of anger flashed through Piper's eyes as she thought about what would have happened should Aaron or Angel have gotten hurt. She pushed a hand through bright green hair and remained silent for a long moment. She was thinking about what Rebecca said.
"Why do you do it?" She asked softly. "Why do you fight to protect these people? The ones that wish we didn't exist in the first place?"
Rebecca's silent long enough that Piper might think she hadn't been heard of not for the look on her face.
"Sometimes, I'm not sure," she admits. "Then I remember that I could just as easily be one of them, it things were different. I used to be just a human.
"So I guess I do it to prove them wrong as much as I do to keep things from falling apart. Because there are good people out in this world, and leaving them to natural selection will only make both sides more miserable." Her lips twist with the bitter taste in her mouth.
"In the end, I refuse to be the monster they think I am. I won't give them the satisfaction."
It was a very self righteous answer, and one that might make most people uncertain, but Piper watched her with interest. She tilted her head to one side and offered a nod, but did not interrupt.
"You seem... convinced. That people thought you are a monster, I mean. Why is that?"
