The way back was going to be harder. Pillars coming out like before. But this time the pillars splintering into further pillars to try and nail her as she evaded them.
She almost tripped at the first pillar, seeing it splinter. She had to move her body as best she could, her muscles starting to complain. She jumped over one splinter, curved around another, and almost got stabbed.
She clenched her teeth tight, but managed to make it, unscathed. Shaky, but unscathed.
She heaved a breath and walked, moving slowly in circles. The only time she stood still was when she was rubbing her legs, working the knots out of her muscles.
The ground behind her would erupt as a spike rose up toward the back of her knee. Mathew taking a step in to close the distance, swinging his blade for her midsection again.
Just dodge, she reminded herself. It took a lot of self contol to not try and take his legs out. Instead, she just side stepped him, grunting with the effort.
She would lower her entire body and roll, still accessing her speed, to get a few feet of distance between them.
Her head was starting to spin a bit, her muscles screaming at her, but it wasn't yet bad enough for her to stop.
The onslaught continued as she rolled away. Spikes coming out of the ground looking to cut her and hurt her. Force her to keep moving until he power would fail. Push her to her limits. And then beyond.
She was able to dodge the onslaught for a while; tucking, rolling, jumping, and weaving away from danger. Her balance was impressive, and her focus allowed her to guess the next move.
However, her body was slowing.
When she went to move one way, her legs gave a jerk and her vision became spotty. She gasped, hands instinctively going to her head in a vain effort to prevent the pain... and she tripped.
Hitting the ground hard, she did the only thing she could think of, rolling from the danger and trying desperately to get the tingling to stop.
The rolling would avoid the worst of the injuries but one of the spikes would rip a healthy gash through her right leg. She could see Mathew advancing, his stone arm morphing into a hammer as he closed the distance.
Her entire body quivered with sickness. The pain echoed through her body, but she was determined not to let him hit her. Gagging slightly at the motion sickness, she gathered her body under her, as if the pain was too much.
When he got close enough, she'd launch herself out of the way, using only her good leg, and tumble a few feet away.
She wasn't interested in answering that question. Her eyes remained hard and focused, a little sweat drop falling down the side of her face.
She put pressure on the wound as she prepared herself to move again. She would have to rely on her own speed and wits.
No longer having speed, however, she was far more focused on watching his body language and feeling the disturbances in the ground to predict his next move and try to stay one step ahead of him.
She curled her body into a ball and moved the moment she felt the ground shifting, rolling until she could get her legs under herself again.
Then, she would launch herself to her feet and fight to keep balance. She could move better on her feet, even with a bloody gash on her leg and an uncooperative victim.
She avoids the hammer and the spike. Mathew would keep coming as she tried to stumble away. Slamming his foot violently into the ground to erect a wall of Earth between him and Piper.
The wall came up and she made a noise of surprise, having thought it would be something else. Another spike. She moved away from it, not trusting it, and glanced to see if there was something nearby.
He kept telling her to just dodge, but she wasn't going to be able to keep dodging for long.
Death never scared her. Failure terrified her endlessly. She stood there, against the wall, staring at the blob that was Mathew until....
The world seemed to slow back down. Everything moved in slow motion and her entire body quivered and tingled. She thought she heard a voice in the back or her head telling her to move, but that surely must have been an illusion.
Still, she did. She tucked again, lowering herself to the ground, and use the wall as a jumping off point. She threw herself under the blade, and then turned, quickly.
At this point, it was all instinct. She moaned in pain but the sound would seem like wind whistling as she danced backwards, then prepared to dodge every move he threw at her.
Because somewhere, somehow, it reminded her of Him.
His blade slammed into the wall that he had created. Spikes shooting outward from the wall toward Piper as she dodged it. Her headache gone as her power's interests aligned with hers.
She moved between the spikes and then slid, under one, until she was rather suddenly at his side. She didn't throw any punches, but there was a smile on her face.
