She didn't feel like crowding her. So, she waited, and one night, the people had finally all left to go to bed. Piper sighed softly and knocked, a quiet sort of sound. With a quiet sigh of relief, she sank back against the bed, not bothering to move it from its seated position just yet on the off chance that someone, probably one of the staff, would come in to check on her. People were better than the blips of machines, but far more exhausting. And so far, everyone was worth it. She didn't think she'd have nearly so many people come by. Sighing in relief, she pushed open the door and waved a book through the air. It was the same book of poems she, Rebecca, had been reading in the library. "I brought you something," she said with a smile. "Looks like you've got enough here, though. And I thought you might actually get bored." Rebecca smiles at seeing the other girl, though Piper looks like she should be in the infirmary herself. She decides not to say anything right away, eyes lighting up at the book displayed before her. "Nuh-uh. Lemme see." She reaches out her hands and pauses, letting out a sheepish laugh as she realizes just how ridiculous she must look. "Please. And don't worry, I'll find time to read it." Lowering her arms, she nods towards the seat. "Glad you could stop by." She was worried about Piper the way their last conversation had ended. She had done something right. Walking over to her, she handed over the book, taking a seat and crossing one leg, ankle to knee. "Of course. You took a pretty nasty fall," she commented. Thinking about the giant battle wasn't her favorite thing in the world, but she looked relaxed, sitting there with Rebecca. There was just something about the girl that calmed her. She makes a face at the fact she's taken a fall. She's heard, all right, and plenty of times. Even if the others mean well, there are only so many times you can hear you took a bad fall or that you need to be more careful before you want to start throwing things. "Thank you." She takes the book and thumbs through it, nodding with a happy expression as she catches some of the familiar titles before placing on her bedside table, on top of the gift box that has a few non-rotted origami shapes around it. Piper chuckled and gave a shake of her head. "I don't know," she said honestly. She leaned back in the chair, running a hand through her hair. "I've been grounded since I got back from the hospital." She didn't seem to think that would be any cause for alarm, and in all honesty, she didn't want to talk about it. She didn't want to explain what had happened... and she didn't want to admit that she had given her friend's name to somebody that could ruin her life. "But you seem to have kept busy. Everything is the outside world to her. "What? Why?" She blinks, not understanding what the girl would have done to be grounded to the campus. Her comment about admirers, however, saves Piper from an immediate answer. "They keep crawling out of the woodwork, but a good chunk of them are people who fought the giant. Well wishers rather than admirers." Thankfully. She frowns, focusing on the fact that Arman flipped his shit and hurt Fiona instead of the smell and feel of the rotted flesh and tissue she'd been shoulder deep in. "I do. More than I thought I would. There's just," she pauses and sighs, but the sound melts into a tired laugh. "I dunno. For some people, it's supposed to be wonderful, right? Or it starts out that way. For a lot of people, that works and it lasts. But sooner or later, it takes work, you know? Sometimes, instead of building up from that, people just walk away." She shakes her head, trying not to think of her parents and failing. Another deep breath as she tries to settle herself. "I may not have the greatest advice except for the occasional 'don't' in terms of romance. My parents haven't been together since almost before I can remember. But I've seen other people happy, you know? And that gives me hope." She fiddles with the blankets, watching her fingers twist the folds into new shapes. "But sometimes...sometimes it's bad when it starts, or could be. Sometimes, there's this little part of your brain that screams, 'don't! stop!' but you do it anyway. You move towards what you shouldn't instead of staying away. Maybe you know it's better if you don't take that plunge, but you find you're still falling regardless." She frowned, a small blush of embarrassment creeping across her face and ears as well. "Sorry," she apologizes as she runs her hand through her hair and clears her throat. "But I probably understand better than you think." She reached out, placing her hand on the edge of her friend's bed. She didn't bother trying to touch her, but she meant for the gesture to be comforting. She even had a soft smile upon her face, eyes cleared with focus. "I went on a ride, one time. It was some silly little thing at an amusement park. I did it because my mother didn't want me to, and I had done well enough in the eyes of... this guy... to deserve it. They strapped me into this harness and lifted me into the air, and when they said 'go,' I pulled the wire... and I flew." She had closed her eyes, trying to remember the sensation. "It was terrifying. Plummeting towards the ground like that, trusting some cable to keep me from dying... and then I swung, up above everyone. They let me swing for a few hours, but gravity made it impossible for me to keep doing it, you know? Eventually, I had to come down. But I still hold a piece of that flight, that freedom, with me." She chuckled, mostly to herself, and looked at Rebecca again. She seemed calm, completely at peace. Thinking about that moment always made her calm. "I think love is a lot like that. The worst part is that uncertainty... That part of your brain telling you no, dont, this is stupid... but once you get over that, over that first fall... it's total freedom. And no matter how long it goes, or when it ends... if it ends... You always carry a piece of freedom with you. You just have to get over that initial fear. Ignore that part of your brain telling you to fuck off, that you're dumb. Because it's worth it." Piper, giving good advice? Damn. Paradigm really had changed her. She appreciates what Piper's gesture means and gives the girl a small smile in silent thanks, holding her thoughts to herself until the end of the story. Towards the beginning, Piper would have seen her frown at the mention of 'this guy' and a small shake of her head, but her smile returned as the story picked up. Rebecca could see the joy the memory brought the other girl by the way her whole face lit up talking about it. "That sounds amazing," she agrees, noting to herself that she would have to try it sometime, or maybe something similar. She chuckles. "Though I guess that's the point you're trying to make, huh? The last thing she needed was Silas deciding he should blow up her best friend, too. Part of her was torn; on one hand, she wasn't tied down and was free to date as she pleased, but on the other, was dating worth it? She frowned the more Piper talked, indeed seeing a bit of arrogance, but she still listens. "Well, I'm not really worried about first loves lasting forever," she admits with a shrug as her expression lightens again. "It's mostly fairytail stuff, though I know some people have managed. It's just new to me. I'm flying by the seat of my pants and hoping for the best." She pauses, giving Piper a shrewd glance as she catches on. "I don't really know," she admitted. "Silas is an arrogant prick. He is brilliant and stupid in the same breath. Mike... I don't know him. I've met him once and have had reason to hate him since. That other guy... Uh... Eric, was it?" She waved her hand, dismissing it. His name didn't matter. "I don't know him at all. I don't know if any of them are worth it. I'm just sort of talking in hypotheticals, I guess." She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms and offering a smile. "Maybe I'm just using you to talk about myself. I don't know. I guess I'm just trying to be a friend, and I'm not exactly experienced in that."
