"Look, Mr. Amtrum. You are the person who first saw me with my powers in action here. You are the one I am training with now. You're also not going to get wishy-washy if there's an area I need improvement on to spare my feelings. You also have enough experience to know what you're talking about.
"I don't care what your opinion is of me. I'm asking for your assessment as my trainer. It has nothing to do with my opinion of myself."
"I thought you were to afraid of yourself to be able to reach anywhere close to your potential. I could see you second guessing yourself at every turn and afraid to commit to a course of action."
He'd tap his desk.
"Now I have seen improvement in that, and a desire to better yourself. You are not the brightest of my students, you are certainly not the most talented of them by a long shot. But you might be the most determined. Which can carry you pretty far."
She nods at his assessment but doesn't interrupt. He's right, especially when she stops to think about it and be honest with herself. She'd come into Paradigm like a skittish thing, but even in the hospital, she'd held her ground rather than flinch back or give way. Somehow, that made her feel better and for a brief instant, there's a hint of a smile.
Nor does she argue with his comment on her lack of brilliance or skill. She knew better than to delude herself there. What catches her are the first and last things he says; she focuses on the first, arms unfolding as she takes more interest.
"How so?" She does raise her brows now, but doesn't move towards one of the seats.
It's a very different vision from how others want her to be. It sounds like it might be closer to what she wants, herself, but considering what Mathew calls fun, she's not placing bets on it.
