"You sound like you could be an expert in anything! Like a prodigy!"
People may think she's one with ballet, but that's only because she trained from a young age and worked really really hard.
"Oh, well, my language studies have been coming along steadily. I'm working on learning Paradigm's history and keeping up with current events when I can. It's really tricky, and I haven't stopped by the Archive yet. Maybe I should have a folder tell me about its contents."
"From my experience, it has worked on picture books at least. Now that I think about it, I haven't tried it on most other books or folders, but I believe like any individual, it would depend on how attentive the book or folder is."
Objects only know as much as they've experienced, from what she's witnessed. Clearly, the helix fossil must've done a lot of traveling in its days to know what pop songs are.
Lucien had been going to go for a hug, albeit being more gentle with Jan Di than Rhett, when Josh blindsided him! Instead, as the shapeshifter tried without much luck to lift him off the ground, Lucien lightly applied a headlock of affection, loose enough Josh could easily slip out without getting hurt. Nothing Josh wasn't used to from his buddy!
"It's good to see you all at once! How've the three of you been?"
He wasn't stupid, something seemed up, just a feeling he got from Jan Di's expression. But this was a party! They could talk about it, or they could not, but it was Christmas Eve and he was going to make sure his friends had a good time.
Since she's doing a lot of eye shifting, when she catches Rhett looking back she keeps her eyes on Josh instead.
Who is not even acknowledging her existence so it's safe. Kinda. If anything he distracted Lucien.
"I've been doing alright, I guess." she answers, staring at nothing, now. "Few more things to do before the night is over, but otherwise hopefully this party'll be fun."
After all these years they had spent together, Rhett could tell when Jan Di wasn't feeling relaxed. In fact he'd often felt that it was his job to fix those moods. This time, however, it was different.
This time, he was the cause.
Rhett looks away, this time unable to hide his frown.
"I'm thirsty. I'll catch up with you guys."
And with that, he turns and heads to the refreshment table.
"Oh yes they do! For many, their existence revolves around their purpose, like my friend Gun. He just wants to shoot everything, but he's really sweet and charming once you get to know him."
Oh Fred.
"I'm sorry, but my name is Fredegund. What's yours?"
"I've been called Fred and Freddy, it's fine. Enough about me though. Was there ever anything you wished you forgot? Like tunes that won't leave your head?"
"Pop songs are pretty catchy and that can be annoying, but because it was an issue when I was a child, I've learned how to effectively repress or 'catalogue' my memories so they're not always flying around."
He grimaces.
"Something traumatic, on the other hand, is hard not to think about. Like getting shot in the leg."
"I can only imagine. I've only played a few games, like Child of Light, Minecraft, and some Animal Crossing. Solo, of course. I don't think I'd do too well competitively."
These games were recommended to her by a maid who was concerned for her being alone a lot of the time at home. In a certain way, Fred had to stop playing when the games reminded her too much of her loneliness, like when there was not much else to explore or whenever the NPC's repeated themselves.
"I too love reading and learning, and when I'm not doing that, I'm spending time with my belongings, feeding the birds, and exploring the city. Though, practicing my ballet is fun too."
Lucien didn't like to get too serious off the field, when things weren't important, but these are his friends, and something was obviously going on. The discomfort on Jan Di's face, the way Rhett made an excuse and bailed from the group, how Josh seemed glad to be rid of him. This wasn't right! The four of them were friends, think about the things they'd all been through! What had he missed?
He was putting some of the picture together already, and he couldn't help a rare frown, but best not to assume.
"You know I don't like to weigh down a party with serious talk, but has something happened while I've been out in the field? I'm not stupid, something is going on."
Jan Di watches him excuse himself, finally looking back at him. With no one stopping him, she was about to herself, but faltered when Josh's arm came around her.
Damn it. That's not what she was trying to do. She just didn't know what to say to him since their last talk...
"We'll be here." she offers, unsure if he even heard her by this point.
She tries to give Lucien a reassuring smile, next.
"Something always happens. How long were you away, again?"
