It was instinct, primarily, because Josh's eyes squinted themselves shut as the blueish-greenish barrier appeared between himself and Matthew. Joshua's mind struggled to catch up as the situation both surprised and overwhelmed him, but he took in the facts little by little. So this is what they wanted out of him as an 'evaluation'. Shoot, he really should have been better prepared. "You're gonna kill me with that thing!" Josh sputtered, wishing he could think of something more intelligent to say as he frantically attempted to keep the rectangular barrier between himself and that gnarly-looking blade. This dude was serious... hell, these guys were NOT playing around. His teeth clenched as the blade struck against the barrier. To his experience, the barriers had absolutely no give, but he had never tested them so extensively. He normally called them out only to protect against serious falls and had been careful not to overuse them at the behest of his parents. So far, they kept him from being impaled. Unfortunately, all of Josh's forward focus neglected his legs. Something crashed into both of his legs, causing them to kick out and send his heavy body toppling to the floor. Josh grunted in pain, but he had more troublesome things to worry about. Things like the fact his barrier, fed by his concentration, had just vanished. "No!" Josh exclaimed reflexively, shaking off the pain in the back of his head from how he fell. His arms crossed over his chest in his prone position, a teal dome extending over his body. Unyielding, yes. Tough as nails, too, but he always wondered if something would be able to break through them. Unfortunately, if he sat around long enough to see it happen first hand, that drill was probably going through him next. Josh's power was clearly a defensive power. How in the dickens was he supposed to make Matthew bleed? Questions later, escape now. Josh pulled himself up to hands and knees, then just knees. His temples worked and his face grew red as he held off Matthew's attack... then released the barrier, tucking and rolling to the side. Football, don't fail me now! He was no Adonis but, damn it, he was still an athlete. If one thing had become clear, he needed to go on the offensive. Sitting in his barriers forever was out of the question and Matthew had already proven that wouldn't work anyhow. Josh hated to do it, but it was either make this guy bleed or... He didn't want to think about that. "Sorry, sorry..." he muttered, backpedaling to give himself some space. He ran at the man, building up speed like a linebacker setting up for the sack of the season. Normally running headlong at somebody holding a blade would be tantamount to tactical suicide. Normally people don't have a nigh-immovable barrier forming before them as they run. "GO!" The word was nonsense, just another thing for Josh to shout as a sort of 'kiai' as he braced for impact. Josh faced the attack head on this time. It was risky, but he tried to make the barriers smaller, only large enough to block the attack instead of creating a wall between himself and Matthew. This would allow him to maintain his concentration for longer. What he didn't quite know for certain is if a smaller barrier was also more dense, since before today nothing had broken even his largest barrier. This guy was really something else. Somewhere after that slash, Josh got an idea. The barriers were, for his entire life, centralized on his location. If he moved, they moved with them. Firing them at Matthew was, then, out of the question, but if he couldn't just run at the guy, that was a no-go as well. So what if... Joshua formed a second barrier, just as small as the first, behind Matthew's head. Roughly as large in diameter as a basketball hoop, the 'shield' floated in place. Then, Josh leaped backwards, taking both barriers with him. He also finds forming the second barrier to be awkward and hard. His mind having a slippery time of having it so incomplete and further away from his body like that. But it does form and when he jumps back Mathew is struck in the back of the head! He'd stumble forward cursing! Josh had never formed two distinct barriers before and that was a good reminder as to why. He'd have to work on it. That could come later. Right now, he had to make somebody bleed. The other two barriers were gone. The next one Josh summoned would be the smallest, an orb encompassing the entirety of his closed right fist and ending at the wrist. The coconut-sized barrier went along with his fist for the ride, thrown as a right hook at Matt's head while he was unbalanced. "SORRY!" He didn't seem to react for several seconds other than moving his jaw before he slowly lifted his head to look at the young Agent with narrowed eyes. Spitting off to the side there was a distinct red color as the blood mixed with his spit. "Get!" He was dismissed. Trainer complete! You are good to go!
